Fishermen in Friendship and neighboring Bremen, Maine Bremen collectively originated the design, one influenced by the fishing sailboats of Gloucester, Massachusetts , particularly the schooner Fredonia of 1889. Although familiar as a pleasure craft today, the Friendship sloop was the traditional fishing boat used off the coast of Maine , especially for lobstering, until the introduction of the gasoline engine early in the 20th century. Friendship area boat builder Wilbur A. Morse produced many examples from the 1880s to the 1910s. One man could manage its single masted rig and haul traps unassisted, yet the boat could carry sizable loads. With an open cockpit aft, and a small forward cabin outfitted with bunks and a stove, it made fishing during cold weather much less arduous than in an open boat. In the 1880 s these sloops ranged from 16 20 feet long but over time they became significantly larger. Modern reproductions, both wood en and fiberglass , remain popular among enthusiasts. Friendship sloops are not identical in size or shape, but they share a common design and appear similar. All are Gaff rig gaff rigged , with a mainsail , a staysail and normally a jib . They may additionally have a topmast with a main topsail and jib topsail flying jib . They all have a full keel , an elliptical stern and a bowsprit . They can range from 21 to 50 but most are between 25 and 31 in length on deck . Owned and skippered by Robert Inch and assisted by his hand, George Conway, the ship was five miles North of Port Jackson , heading for the Hawkesbury River with a cargo of grain when it was hit by a squall and sunk after its mainsail jibed. This was observed by the sloop Hope which was travelling a mile south of the Charlotte at the time of the sinking. Both Inch and Conway were drowned. ref Australian Shipwrecks vol1 1622 1850 , Charles Bateson , AH and AW Reed, Sydney, 1972, ISBN 0 589 07112 2 p45 ref References Reflist Navbox shipwrecks of New South Wales Wrecksnorthsydney coord missing New South Wales Category Shipwrecks of the Northern Sydney Region Category New South Wales built ships Category History of New South Wales Category Sloops of Australia Category Individual sailing vessels Category Grain ships Category 1803 ships Category Maritime incidents in 1808 Category 1808 in Australia Category 1788 1850 ships of Australia Category Merchant ships of Australia Merchantship stub ...   more details

  1. Pushmataha (sloop)

Pushmataha was a merchant sloop. Apparently named for noted Choctaw Nation warrior and statesman Pushmataha Chief Pushmataha , little is known of the vessel except for its service to Confederate commercial interests during the American Civil War . In a war dispatch dated October 8, 1863, the USS Cayuga 1861 USS Cayuga a ship assigned to the Union Navy Union Navy s West Gulf Blockading Squadron reported engaging the Pushmataha off Texas Sabine Pass , on the Calcasieu River in Louisiana. While attempting to enter the Mermentau River the Pushmataha ran aground, three quarters of a mile from a beach. ref Gaines, W. Craig. Encyclopedia of Civil War Shipwrecks . Baton Rouge LSU Press, 1988. Page 164. ref Upon being boarded by a party from the Cayuga , the Pushmataha was found to have been abandoned by its crew, which was rowing ashore in boats. Its crew had opened gunpowder casks and set one on fire. The Cayuga s crew extinguished the fire and, after being unable to refloat the ship, removed its cargo and destroyed it. According to papers found aboard the Pushmataha it had received its cargo of rum, wine and gunpowder in Havana, Cuba. The ship bore the English ensign thought to be the British Red Ensign and, according to her registration papers, was crewed by two Englishmen, one Italian, and one Portuguese. The Pushmataha s muster roll had been signed in Havana on September 22, 1863 by Her Britannic Majesty s acting consul general in Cuba, according to the report by the Cayuga . ref Official Records of the Union and Confederate Navies in the War of the Rebellion .
