  1. Adelaide of Normandy

Adelaide of Normandy or Adeliza c. 1026 in Calvados , France Citation needed date August 2007 c. 1090 was the half sister of William the Conqueror . She was the daughter of Robert the Magnificent , Duke of Normandy. Robert of Torigny in his own chronicle explicitly states that she was daughter of Robert by a different mistress than Herleva , mother of William. However, writing additions to the Gesta Normannorum Ducum , the same chronicler calls her uterine sister of William the Conqueror. This might suggest she was a material half sister, daughter of Herleva, or a full sister of William. ref Douglas, David C. 1964 William the Conqueror , p. 380 81 ref However, Elisabeth van Houts has shown that Robert uses the expression elsewhere to refer to paternal half brothers, and it likely means the same here, that Adelaide was half sister of William, and his statement elsewhere that they had different mothers should be accepted that she was daughter of Robert by a mistress other than Herleva. ref van Houts, Elisabeth 2002 .
