Significant earthquakes Since the disastrous 1939 Erzincan earthquake , there have been seven earthquake s measuring over 7.0 on the Richter scale , each happening at a point progressively further west. Seismologist s studying this pattern believe that Earthquake storm earthquakes happen in storms over a number of decades and that one earthquake triggers the next. By analysing the stresses caused along the fault by each earthquake, they were able to forecast 1999 zmit earthquake the shock that hit the town of zmit with devastating effect in August 1999. The northerly side is a transform boundary with the Eurasian Plate forming the NorthAnatolianFault Zone NAFZ . Research indicates that the Anatolian Plate is rotating counterclockwise as it is being pushed west by the Arabian Plate, impeded from any northerly movement by the Eurasian Plate. In some references, the Anatolian Plate is referred to as a block of continental crust still coupled to the Eurasian Plate. But studies of the NorthAnatolianFault indicate that Anatolia is de coupled from the Eurasian Plate. It is now being squeezed by the Arabian Plate from the east and forced toward the west as the Eurasian Plate to its north is blocking motion in that direction. The Anatolian hypothesis proposes that the dispersal of Proto Indo Europeans originated in Neolithic Anatolia . The hypothesis suggests that the speakers of the Proto Indo European language PIE lived in Anatolia during the Neolithic era, and associates the distribution of historical Indo European languages with the expansion during the Neolithic revolution during the 7th millennium BC seventh and 6th millennium BC sixth millennia BC. The alternative and more academically favored view is the Kurgan hypothesis . The Dent Fault is a major fault geology fault on the boundary between the counties of Cumbria and North Yorkshire in northern England . The fault is named after the village of Dent, Cumbria Dent in Dentdale on the western margin of the Yorkshire Dales . The fault, or rather the Dent Fault System a collection of closely associated faults and folds, defines the western edge of the Askrigg Block , a geological structure which underlies the Yorkshire Dales. The fault is associated with the Taythes Anticline to its west and the Fell End Syncline to its east. Other than vertical movement on the fault, there has also been an element of strike slip movement. To the north, the fault links with the Pennine Fault System in the vicinity of Brough and with the Craven Fault near Kirkby Lonsdale to the south. ref Stone et al. 2010 British Regional Geology Northern England 5th edition Keyworth, Notts, British Geological Survey ref References reflist Category Geology of England Category Geology of Cumbria Category Geology of North Yorkshire ... more details
