Its name is derived from confluence of the south flowing North Fork of the Salmon River Idaho Salmon River with the north flowing main Salmon River, which makes a near right angle turn here to flow westward across the state to Riggins, Idaho Riggins . U.S. Route 93 US 93 serves the community, connecting it with Salmon, Idaho Salmon to the south and Lost Trail Pass to the north. Long time families in the community include Cummings, Prestwich, Randolph, Hughes, Smith, and Maxwell. The community of North Fork is built around the North Fork Store which also houses a post office and small liquor store. There are two hotels and a U.S. Forest Service Station. The community area includes a non domination Christian Church .5 miles South East of North Fork and a small private Catholic Chapel some 5 miles North just off U.S. Highway 93 North. Notable creeks with trails and stunning vistas include Trail Gulch, Fourth of July, Hull Creek, Hughes Creek, Lick Creek, Ditch Creek, Burns Gulch, Indian Creek, and Ulysses Lookout. Lewis and Clark traveled through this area and met with a local Indian man, Toby, who got the expedition lost crossing into Montana. Historians believe that they found Toby and enlisted his help as a guide at the confluence of the North Fork and Salmon rivers, or at the mouth of what is now known as Hull Creek, named after homesteader John Hull. A monument once stood to commemorate this meeting. This led to the name of the Idaho Montana mountain pass, Lost Trail. Also named from this, is the Lost Trail Mountain Ski Area. The river has its headwaters near Spirit Lake Washington Spirit Lake , on the north side of Mount St. Helens , and flows about convert 30 mi km to the Toutle River, convert 22 mi km upstream of its confluence with the Columbia River . The largest tributary is the Green River North Fork Toutle River Green River , which joins near the unincorporated town of Toutle, Washington Toutle . The result of the eruption was that many hillsides were stripped of forest, and as a result erosion has increased dramatically and the North Fork is now extremely laden with sediment. Previously, Spirit Lake was the source of the river, but eruptions blocked the outlet and Spirit Lake no longer drains directly into the North Fork instead, a tunnel was excavated in 1985 to connect the lake with South Coldwater Creek, a tributary of the North Fork. Once a mature river, the North Fork has transformed into a braided stream of relatively young origin, and its valley floor is less than three decades old. The Toutle River Sediment Retention Structure was built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on the river in 1989 to prevent this sediment from traveling downstream and clogging the shipping channel of the Columbia River .
