  1. Mainland Finland

Mainland Finland lang fi manner Suomi , lang sv fasta Finland is a term used in statistics and in other contexts to exclude the Autonomous entity autonomous land Islands under Finland Finnish sovereignty from the rest of Finland. In legal contexts, the relation between the mainland and the land Islands is depicted by the word pairs valtakunta maakunta Finnish or riket landskapet Swedish . The literal translation into English is realm province , but the translation given by the Finnish Ministry of Justice is the State land . ref http www.finlex.fi fi laki kaannokset 1991 en19911144.pdf Act on the Autonomy of land 1144 1991 and http www.finlex.fi fi laki ajantasa 1991 19911144 the Finnish original . E.g. 27 shows the difference. ref The term mainland Finland is significant in the context of legal differences between land and mainland Finland, and in the context of differences of culture, language, history, and self perceived nationhood between the landers and the Swedish speaking Finns in mainland Finland. However, since the population of land is only about 0.5 of that of mainland Finland, and below 10 of that of the Swedish speaking Finns in mainland Finland, there are many instances when this distinction is ignored. Notes In a Geography geographical sense the term mainland Finland could, of course, also be used to exclude Finland s other sea islands, but when distinguishing between land and the rest of Finland, the term does encompass those islands. Mainland Finland is not to be confused with Finland Proper , which is the Historical provinces of Finland historical province adjacent to land. nihongo Mainland Japan naichi lit. inner lands is a term to distinguish the area of Japan from its outlying territories. It was an official term in the pre war period, distinguishing Japan and the colonies in East Asia . After the end of World War II , the term became uncommon, but still is used as an unofficial term to distinguish the area of Japan from Okinawa Prefecture Okinawa or Hokkaid . The literal Japanese meaning might best be translated as inner Japan or inner lands. It is also somewhat confusing as Mainland Japan is defined to consist of several major islands Hokkaid , Honsh , Ky sh , Shikoku and many minor ones. The term mainland Japan is also sometimes used to translate Honsh , the largest island, though naichi not.
