In 1702 1704, during the Great Northern War , Peter the Great established a shipyard there, fortified the monastery and ordered the population of Staraya Ladoga to relocate to the nearby village. Finnish Ladoga Naval Detachment lang fi Laatokan laivasto osasto was a Finnish Navy Finnish naval unit stationed on Lake Ladoga between 1920 1940 and 1941 1944. Background The Treaty of Tartu Russian Finnish Treaty of Tartu was signed by the Russians and the Finns in 1920. It included terms which limited the size of naval vessels on Ladoga to 100 tons, and the calibre of their armament to a maximum of 47 mm. When the Finns embarked on their naval rebuilding program in the early 1930s, some vessels were purposely designed to fit this 100 t limitation, including Finnish submarine Saukko a small submarine . The Finns, however, found more use for their few vessels in the Baltic Sea , and therefore had only a few small patrol boats on the lake. As the clouds of war began to draw closer the Finns had to improvise. unreferenced date May 2011 The Novaya Zemlya effect is a Polar climate polar mirage caused by high refraction of sunlight between atmospheric thermocline s. The Novaya Zemlya effect will give the impression that the sunrise sun is rising earlier than it actually should astronomically speaking and depending on the meteorology meteorological situation the effect will present the sun as a line or a square which is sometimes referred to as the rectangular sun , made up of flattened hourglass shapes. The mirage requires rays of sunlight to have an Inversion meteorology inversion layer for hundreds of kilometres at least 400  km , and depends on the inversion layer s temperature gradient . The sunlight must bend to the Earth s curvature at least 400  km to allow an elevation rise of 5 degrees for sight of the sun disk. The first person to record the phenomenon was Gerrit de Veer , a member of Willem Barentsz ill fated third expedition into the polar region. Novaya Zemlya , the archipelago where de Veer first observed the phenomenon, lends its name to the effect.
