The scene takes a macabre turn when it becomes apparent that they were serving as host bodies to two alien entities, and the topic of conversation shifts to that of an imminent danger, one which seems to have been encountered by other spacefarers and that someone always dies. A viral infection hits Commander Charles Tucker III Tucker while on an away mission with Ensign Hoshi Sato Sato in the shuttlepod and he collapses while coughing heavily. Soon, Sato begins to exhibit the same symptoms. Upon examination by the ship s medical officer, Dr. Phlox Star Trek Phlox , it is found that the virus is highly contagious and is a alternative biochemistry silicon based life form , rather than a carbon based one. Captain Jonathan Archer Archer explains to Tucker that Sub commander T Pol and Phlox are looking for a cure, taking care not to mention that they were estimated to die within mere hours, given the rate of viral growth. Participant observereffect redirects here. psychology sidebar The observer expectancy effect also called the experimenter expectancy effect , expectancy bias , observereffect , or experimenter effect is a form of reactivity psychology reactivity , in which a researcher s cognitive bias causes them to unconsciously influence the participants of an experiment. An example of the observer expectancy effect is demonstrated in music backmasking , in which hidden verbal messages are said to be audible when a recording is played backwards. Some people expect to hear hidden messages when reversing songs, and therefore hear the messages, but to others it sounds like nothing more than random sounds. Often when a song is played backwards, a listener will fail to notice the hidden lyrics until they are explicitly pointed out, Confirmation bias after which they are obvious . Other uses Observereffect disambiguation Observereffect notability date March 2012 unreferenced date March 2012 In information technology , the observereffect is the potential impact of the act of observing a process output while the process is running. For example if a process uses a log file to record its progress, the process could slow. Furthermore, the act of viewing the file while the process is running could cause an I O error in the process, which could, in turn, cause it to stop. Dubious date May 2011 Another example would be observing the performance of a CPU by running both the observed and observing programs on the same CPU, which will lead to inaccurate results because the observer program itself affects the CPU performance modern, heavily cached and pipelined CPUs are particularly affected by this kind of observation . Observing or rather, debugging a running program by modifying its source code such as adding extra output or generating log files or by running it in a debugger may sometimes cause certain Software bug bug s to diminish or change their behavior, creating extra difficulty for the person trying to isolate the bug see Heisenbug . Cleanup date May 2010 merge from Probe effect date October 2011 Other uses Observereffect disambiguation Observereffect In physics , the term observereffect refers to changes that the act of observation will make on the phenomenon being observed. This is often the result of instruments that, by necessity, alter the state of what they measure in some manner. A commonplace example is checking the pressure in an automobile tire this is difficult to do without letting out some of the air, thus changing the pressure. This effect can be observed in many domains of physics. Particle physics For an electron to become detectable, a photon must first interact with it, and this interaction will change the path of that electron. It is also possible for other, less direct means of measurement to affect the electron. Unreferenced date December 2010 dict The term observer has a number of non equivalent uses in science. Special relativity main Observer special relativity The term observer in special relativity refers most commonly to an inertial reference frame . In such cases an inertial reference frame may be called an inertial observer to avoid ambiguity. Note that these uses differ significantly from the ordinary English meaning of observer . Reference frames are inherently nonlocal constructs, covering all of space and time or a nontrivial part of it thus it does not make sense to speak of an observer in the special relativistic sense having a location. Also, an inertial observer cannot accelerate at a later time, nor can an accelerating observer stop accelerating. The Ponteland Observer was a weekly newspaper that circulated in the village of Ponteland in Northumberland in north east England and, later, the southern part of the borough of Castle Morpeth as well as some of the north western suburbs of Newcastle upon Tyne , from 1 October 1982 until 9 January 1986. It was originally owned by Ponteland Observer Ltd, a company belonging to Michael Sharman, its first editor, who was at the same time editor of the Hexham Courant owned by Cumbrian Newspapers Ltd. Unlike other paid for weeklies in Northumberland it was a tabloid and was not part of a larger newspaper group. At that time the only weekly newspaper to pay attention to Ponteland was the Ponteland edition of the Alnwick based Northumberland Gazette . A circulation of 2000 was claimed by the time Sharman left the Courant early in 1984, but in May that year he was found dead in his office shortly before his plans to launch a sister title to the Observer in Gosforth could be brought to fruition a verdict of suicide was reached. The newspaper was bought by the Tweeddale Press Group, based in Berwick upon Tweed , with effect from 18 May 1984. From 5 July 1984 it became a broadsheet newspaper incorporated with the Morpeth Herald meaning that the Observer was effectively an edition of the Herald , with the front page and some interior pages changed. This arrangement ended formally from the 6 September 1984 edition but in fact much copy continued to be shared with the Herald and occasionally other Tweeddale Press titles, especially the Alnwick Advertiser . At the end of 1985 the Tweeddale Press Group decided that the Observer , with a circulation of just 1200, would never become viable and decided to close the newspaper and its Ponteland office the last edition was published on 9 January ... the Ponteland Observer on its masthead, despite subsequent changes of editor and ownership ... of quantum indeterminacy . Hawthorne EffectObservereffect Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle List of paradoxes References J.K. Chambers, Sociolinguistic Theory. Patricia Cukor Avila, Revisiting the Observer ...In the social sciences , the observer s paradox refers to phenomena where the observation of an event or experiment is influenced by the presence of the observer investigator. In linguistics In the field of sociolinguistics , the term Observer s Paradox was coined by William Labov , who stated with regards to the term blockquote the aim of linguistic research in the community must be to find out how people talk when they are not being systematically observed yet we can only obtain this data by systematic observation. blockquote The term refers to the challenge sociolinguists face while doing fieldwork, where the task of gathering data on Vernacular An informal register natural speech is undermined by the researcher s presence itself. As a field worker attempts to observe the daily vernacular of a speaker in an interview, the speaker, aware that their speech will be used for scholarly research, is likely to adopt a formal Register sociolinguistics register . This produces data that is not representative of the speaker s typical speech, and the paradox lies in the fact that if the researcher was not present, the speaker would use normal vernacular. Hawthorne effect This variant of the phenomenon is named for the Hawthorne Works, a factory built by Western Electric, where efficiency engineers in the 1920s and 1930s were trying to determine if improved working conditions such as better lighting improved the performance of production workers. The engineers noted that when they provided better working conditions in the production line, efficiency increased. But when the engineers ..., Hawthorne effect was coined in 1955 by Henry A.
