Odo of Cheriton or Sherington? ref John Philipot Villare cantianum or, Kent surveyed and illustrated. 1776. http books.google.com books?id XC3nAAAAMAAJ&pg PA294 p.294 ref c .1185 &ndash 1246 47 was an English preacher and fabulist . He visited Paris, and it was probably there that he gained the degree of Master. Bale mentions a tradition that he was a Cistercian or a Pr monstratensian but he can hardly have taken vows if, as seems most likely, he was the Master Odo of Cheriton mentioned in Kentish and London records from 1211 to 1247, the son of William of Cheriton, lord of the manor of Delce in Rochester, Kent Rochester . In 1211 12 William was debited with a fine to the crown, for Odo to have the custodia of Cheriton, Kent Cheriton church, near Folkestone . In 1233 Odo inherited his father s estates in Delce, Cheriton, and elsewhere. A charter of 1235 6 British Museum, Harl. Ch. 49 B 45 , by which he quitclaimed the rent of a shop in London, has his seal attached, bearing the figure of a monk seated at a desk, with a star above him St. Odo of Cluny ? . He died in 1247. Odo of Glanfeuil was a ninth century Benedictine abbot of Saint Maur des Foss s , a historian , and hagiographer . He entered the Abbey of Saint Maur de Glanfeuil in Le Thoureil , Maine et Loire not later than 856 and became its abbot in 861. In 868 Odo became also Abbot of Saint Maur des Foss s. In 864 he issued a Life of St. Maurus , a revision, he claimed, of a Life originally written by Faustus of Montecassino , which makes St. Maurus the founder and first abbot of Glanfeuil, and is the chief source for the legendary sojourn of that saint in France. It is so anachronistic that it is generally believed to have been composed by Odo himself, though Mabillon and a few modern writers still ascribe it to Faustus Mabillon in Annales O.S.B. , I, 629 54, and in Acta SS. Ord. S. Ben. , I, 259 sq. Adlhoch in Studien und Mitteilungen aus dem Benediktiner und Cistercienser Orden , XXVI and XXVII Br nn, 1905 and 1906 Plaine, ibid., XVI 1905 Huillier, Etude critique des actes de S. Maur de Glanfeuil Paris, 1903 Halphen in Revue historique LXXXVIII Paris, 1905 , 287 95 . The Life is printed in Acta SS. January, II, 321 332. Another work of Odo, Miracula S. Mauri, sive restauratio monasterii Glannafoliensis , has some historical value. The author narrates how he fled with the relics of St. Maurus from the Normans in 862 and how the relics were finally transferred to the monastery of St Maur des Foss s near Paris in 868. It is printed in Acta Sanctorum , , January, II, 334 42. A relative of Thurstan , the Archbishop of York , Osbert probably owed his ecclesiastical positions to this relative. After Thurstan s death, Osbert was opposed to one of the candidates for the archbishopric, William of York William fitzHerbert , and worked to secure fitzHerbert s deposition and replacement by Henry Murdac . After Murdac s death in 1153, Osbert tried to prevent the return of fitzHerbert, but these attempts were unsuccessful. When fitzHerbert died suddenly in 1154, Osbert was accused of murdering the newly returned archbishop. Although he was never convicted of the murder in either a secular or an ecclesiastical court, he was stripped of his clerical status and became a layman before 1158. He died after 1184, perhaps even after 1194. Early life Osbert was first mentioned in the historical record between 1121 and 1128 when he appears in a charter, which although likely a forgery, probably contains an authentic witness list.
