Abiel Holmes December 24, 1763 June 4, 1837 was an American Congregational clergyman and historian in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. He was the father of OliverWendellHolmes, Sr. and grandfather of OliverWendellHolmes, Jr. . Biography Holmes was born in Woodstock, Connecticut . He was the son of David Holmes and Mehitable Mayhew. He graduated from Yale College in 1783. In 1784, while ministering in South Carolina , he was recruited to be the minister at the Congregational Church in Midway, Georgia . He returned to New England to be ordained in 1785 and once for health reasons between 1786 and 1787, but returned to Midway and remained there until 1791. Holmes married Mary Stiles, the daughter of Ezra Stiles , the president of Yale. Mr. Stiles was the subject of a laudatory biography penned by Holmes. In 1792, Rev. Holmes became the minister at First Parish in Cambridge First Church in Cambridge, Massachusetts . In 1805, he published a history entitled American Annals . Amid a theological controversy between Calvinism and Arminianism , Holmes resigned from the ministry in 1831 and the church chose a Unitarianism Unitarian minister to replace him. Holmes died June 4, 1837. Family Holmes married Mary Stiles, daughter of Ezra Stiles , in 1790 and second to Sarah Wendell. Wendell Kim born March 9, 1950 in Honolulu , Hawaii is a former professional baseball player, coach and manager. He most recently served as the coach baseball third base coach for the Chicago Cubs , and is of mixed Korean and Hawaiian descent. Kim got his start in professional baseball as a player, coming up through the San Francisco Giants farm system as an infielder in the late seventies. He reached the AAA level in 1978, and had a .303 batting average in the Pacific Coast League . He never reached the major leagues, however, and he was released by the following spring. He played a brief stint in the Inter American League in 1979, but was out of baseball by the end of the season. In 1980 he began his coaching career, starting out as a coach for the AA Shreveport Captains . Throughout the eighties he coached and managed several teams in the Giants organization, including the Captains, Clinton Giants , Fresno Giants and Phoenix Firebirds . It wasn t until 1989 that he got his first taste of major league baseball, when he became the third base coach for the Giants. Kim held the Giants job for eight years, before leaving to coach third base for the Boston Red Sox . He held down the third base coaching job in Boston for four years, manning the position from 1997 to 2000. Wendell Philips Culley January 8, 1906, Worcester, Massachusetts June 1983 was an American jazz trumpeter. Culley played locally in Boston , then moved to New York City in 1931, where he found early work playing with Horace Henderson and Cab Calloway . He then spent 11 years in the employ of Noble Sissle , recording with him extensively. Following this he played with Lionel Hampton 1944 49 , then worked again briefly with Sissle before playing in Count Basie s Orchestra from 1951 to 1959.
