Dr. George Mavrodes is emeritus professor of philosophy at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He is a member of Ann Arbor Christian Reformed Church. Biography Professor Mavrodes is the author of Belief in God A Study in the Epistemology of Religion 1970 and Revelation in Religious Belief 1988 . He has nearly one hundred articles covering such topics as revelation, omnipotence, miracles, resurrection, personal identity and survival of death, and faith and reason, as well as ethics and social policy issues that intersect with religion and morality abortion, pacifism, the just war, and nuclear deterrence. Professor Mavrodes has served as President of the Society for Philosophy of Religion and the Society of Christian Philosophers, and as a member of the Executive Committee of the American Theological Society. Professor Mavrodes has held editorial positions with American Philosophical Quarterly, Faith and Philosophy, and The Reformed Journal. He remains an active participant in Departmental activities. One of his more widely studied works is titled Religion and the Queerness of Morality where he questions Russell s A Free Man s Worship . He distinguished two major ways of understanding evolution. The first is the naturalistic way of understanding evolution as explicable entirely in terms of natural law without reference to a divine intention or intervention. But a theistic understanding of evolution holds that there was a divine teleology in this process, a divine direction at each crucial stage in accordance with divine plan or intention. In other words, a theistic understanding of evolution holds that although evolution occurred, God still directed evolution. Evolution is merely the tool of God s design. Evolution, and even the great struggle for existence that selects some animals to survive and others to die, i ...   more details

  1. Discourse on Metaphysics

italic title The Discourse on Metaphysics Discours de m taphysique , 1686 is a short 60 pages in translation treatise by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz in which he develops a philosophy concerning physical substance, motion and resistance of bodies, and God s role within the universe. It is one of the few texts presenting in a consistent form the earlier philosophy of Leibniz. The Discourse is closely connected to the epistolary discussion which he carried with Antoine Arnauld . ref Sleigh R., Leibniz and Arnauld , New haven Yale, 1990. ref However Leibniz refrained from sending the full text and it remained unpublished until the mid 19th century. ref The first edition in 1846 by Pertz was from a copy but later the original manuscript was found and Henri Lestrienne published it in 1907 now it is printed in the Akademie Ausgabe , Reihe VI, Vierter Band, S.1529 ref Arnauld received only an abridged version in 37 points which resumed whole paragraphs and steered their discussion. The metaphysical considerations proceed from God to the substantial world and back to the spiritual realm. The starting point for the work is the conception of God as an absolutely perfect being I , that God is good but goodness exists independently of God a rejection of divine command theory II , and that God has created the world in an ordered and perfect fashion III VII . At the time of its writing Discourse made the controversial claim That the opinions of... scholasticism scholastic philosophers are not to be wholly despised XI . Early work in modern philosophy during 17th century philosophy the 17th century were based on a rejection of many of the precepts of medieval philosophy. Leibniz saw the failures of scholasticism merely as one of rigor. If some careful and meditative mind were to take the trouble to clarify and direct their thoughts in the manner of analytic geometers, he would find a great treasure of important truths, wholly demonstrable. 1. Inconsistent triad

Refimprove date May 2008 An inconsistent triad consists of three proposition s of which at most two can be true. For example Alice loves me. If Alice loves me, she would have sent flowers. Alice hasn t sent flowers. If one finds oneself believing all three propositions of an inconsistent triad, then to be rational one must give up or modify at least one of those beliefs. Maybe Alice doesn t love me, or maybe she wouldn t send flowers to me if she did, or maybe she actually has sent flowers. The problem of evil The problem of evil is often given in the form of an inconsistent triad. For example, J. L. Mackie gave the following three propositions God is omnipotent God is omnibenevolent Evil exists Mackie argued that these propositions were inconsistent, and thus, that there could be no all powerful, all loving God. This could also be seen as God is omnipotent God is omnibenevolent Suffering exists One has to take caution, however, in calling any given triad inconsistent without considering the underlying assumptions that are made. Mackie s argument assumes that God s omnipotence and omnibenevolence would necessarily cause him to eradicate evil without delay. If one realizes that the human heart is corrupted and is the source of most evil suffering, and if Mackie were right, then God would have to immediately eradicate all humans as well. ref The Supremacy of Christ in our Postmodern World, John Piper and Justin Taylor, Crossway Books, p51 70, ISBN 158134922X ref This would fly in the face of God s benevolence toward humans. The Christian Bible teaches, however, that God has delayed his judgement of evil to a future date after which he will restore all things. Men and women are given time to embrace salvation from the evil in their own hearts forgiveness and redemption through Jesus Christ. This taken into account reveals the real inconsistent triad God is loving and merciful God has delayed his judgement to allow men and women to embrace his salvation God should have ...   more details

  1. Dolev-Yao model

The Dolev Yao model is a Mathematical model formal model used to prove properties of interactive protocols. The network The network is represented by a set of abstract machines that can exchange messages. These messages consist of formal terms. The adversary Deleted image removed Image Dolev yao.png thumb ffdc 1 Dolev yao.png log 2011 November 22 date November 2011 The adversary in this model can overhear, intercept, and synthesise any message and is only limited by the constraints of the cryptographic methods used. In other words the attacker carries the message. This omnipotence has been very difficult to model and many threat models simplify it, as, for example, the attacker in ubiquitous computing . The algebraic model Cryptographic primitives are modeled by abstract operators. For example, asymmetric encryption for a user math x math is represented by the encryption function math E x math and the decryption function math D x math . Their main properties are that their composition is the identity function math D x E x E x D x 1 math and that an encrypted message math E x M math reveals nothing about math M math . Unlike in the real world, the adversary can neither manipulate the encryption s bit representation nor guess the key. 1. Martín Adán

Image MartinAdan.jpg right 300px Mart n Ad n Lima , 1908 1985 , pseudonym of Rafael de la Fuente Benavides , was a Peru vian poet whose body of work is notable for its hermeticism and metaphysics metaphysical depth. From a very young age Ad n demonstrated great literary talent talent he shared with classmates Emilio Adolfo Westphalen and Estuardo N ez . As time passed, he lived with increasing economic difficulty and suffered from serious alcoholism. A good part of his final years were spent in sanitariums, until his death in 1985. Allen Ginsberg showed interest in Ad n s work and in the writer himself. Taking advatage of his trip to Peru where he planned to study the ayahuasca , Ginsberg was able to interview Mart n Ad n. Work Mart n Adan s first book was the novel La casa de cart n The Cardboard House . Published in 1928 when the author was only 20 years old, The Cardboard House was influenced by the Avant garde and is one of the best examples of Peruvian narrative of its time. The novel was told through the paintings of a young man s experiences and reflections and was notable for evoking the district of Lima, Barranco . The Cardboard House s innovative theme and structure can, in some ways, be considered precursorial to novels of the literary boom in Latin America. The remainder of Ad n s work was poetry . It stands out for a profundity of philosophical reflection, that sinks into the mysteries of what s eternal and transcendent. His poetry incorporates a series of images and hermetic, symbolic metaphors among them, notably, the rose . Ad n s poetry mixes novel uses of language with traditional poetic forms like the sonnet . Reality and identity are also common themes in his poetry. With his body of poetry, Ad n tried to achieve a creaci n total total creation through la poes a absoluta absolute poetry and affirm the divine power and omnipotence of the poet who creates realities. He is an advisor to government and the private sector and is active in transformation both of business and the Department of Defense. Ullman is known as a developer of the doctrine of shock and awe . Theories The doctrine of shock and awe was developed by Ullman and James P. Wade and was a product of the National Defense University of the United States. It technically is known as rapid dominance and is a military doctrine based on the use of overwhelming decisive force, dominant battlefield awareness, dominant maneuvers, and spectacular displays of power to paralyze an adversary s perception of the battlefield and destroy his will to fight. Controversies Call for more realistic foreign policy In a stand against George W. Bush , in an October 2006 edition of his Washington Times column Ullman wrote, The world indeed has changed.
