The Mesha Stele bears an inscription of about 840 BCE by Mesha , ruler of Moab , in which Mesha boasts of his victories over Omri king of Israel and his son, who had been oppressing Moab. Davies has been labeled a biblical minimalist and associated with the The Copenhagen School theology Copenhagen School . He also has an interest in the development of secular scholarship and contemporary cultural issues, as illustrated in his book Whose Bible Is It Anyway? . His brief book In Search Of Ancient Israel poses the idea that the ancient notion of Israel referred to at least three separate entities, a tribal formation at the time of Merneptah, the kingdom of the house of Omri and a later idealized version that united Omrides Omride Israel and Judah, thus putting into question the notion of the united kingdom and the structure of the biblical narrative. One of the book s conclusions On the basis of the biblical and non biblical data, the social conditions appropriate for the emergence of the biblical Israel appear to be found in Persian period Yehud. ref Davies 1992, p.83. ref Many of his suggestions in this book have subsequently come to be accepted as normative, even by some of his most vociferous critics such as the biblical archaeologist William Dever, as Davies showed in his review of two of Dever s own recent publications Crypto Minimalism , Journal of Semitic Studies 50 2005 , pp.  117 136 . 1. The Bible and history

lead too short date November 2010 Bible related The Bible from a historical perspective, includes numerous fields of study, ranging from archeology and astronomy to linguistics and methods of comparative literature . The Bible may provide insight into pursuits, including but not limited to our understanding of ancient and modern culture, mythology, anthropology and morality. Examining the historical context, importance ascribed to events, and the contrast between the descriptions of these events and historical evidence of their occurrence or lack thereof is useful in providing information on topics beyond the simple factual accuracy of the Bible. The higher the volume of the earliest texts and their parallels to each other , the greater the textual reliability and the less chance that the transcript s content has been changed over the years. Multiple copies may also be grouped into text types see New Testament Early manuscripts New Testament text types , with some types judged closer to the hypothetical original than others. Differences often extend beyond minor variations and may involve, for instance, interpolation of material central to issues of historicity and doctrine, such as the Mark 16 Mark 16 9.E2.80.9320 in the manuscripts and patristic evidence ending of Mark 16 .
