The term biblical authority refers to the extent to which propositions within the Old and New Testament scriptures are authoritative over human belief and conduct, as well as the extent to which their propositions are accurate in matters of history and science. Biblical authority entails but is not exhausted by questions raised by biblical inerrancy , biblical infallibility , biblical interpretation , biblical criticism , and Biblical law in Christianity . During the late 1970s and early 1980s, a debate over biblical authority arose between Jack Rogers clergy Jack B. Rogers and Donald K. McKim , on the one hand, and John D. Woodbridge , on the other. Rogers and McKim, in their 1979 book, The Authority and Interpretation of the Bible An Historical Approach , advanced the view that the Bible has authority over social endeavors, such as imperatives for conduct, for church organization, and for the articles of faith, but isn t necessarily reliable in its reportage of historical events and scientific facts. The belief that Scripture is inerrant in matters of history and science, argued Rogers and McKim, constituted a 19th century innovation. Woodbridge challenged this thesis in his 1982 book Biblical Authority A Critique of the Rogers McKim Proposal , arguing that for each of those categories, God s Word has authority and is without error. Moreover, Woodbridge asserted that this particular rendering of biblical authority had been the normative, orthodox position throughout the history of Christianity. unreferenced date December 2006 The Cable Authority was the United Kingdom statutory body established by the Cable and Broadcasting Act 1984 to regulate the newly liberalised cable television industry. It came into existence on 1 December 1984 and took on its functions with effect from 1 January 1985. Its responsibilities were taken over by the new Independent Television Commission on 1 January 1991. The Authority consisted of a board of members appointed by the Home Secretary under the chairmanship of Richard Burton, former chairman of Gillette UK, and an executive staff headed by Jon Davey as Director General. The Authority had two main functions. The first was the grant of licences, following a competitive franchising procedure, for the provision of services over a new broadband cable system in a specified geographical area. Franchises were to be exclusive, and were granted after examination of the applicants financial capacity and their plans, according to a series of criteria laid down in the Act of Parliament. By the end of the Authority s life, 136 cable franchises had been awarded, embracing about 15 million homes of the 22 million in the UK. The second main function was the regulation of the programme services carried by cable systems. To this end the Authority was required to draw up codes on programme standards covering taste and decency, accuracy and impartiality of news, etc , advertising practice and sponsorship, and then monitor programme services to ensure that the rules were kept. Although this was achieved through the licences granted to cable operators, they were usually but the local retailers of national services, and the Authority s dealings were in practice with those who provided the programme channels. Unreferenced date January 2007 Ambient authority is a term used in the study of access control systems. A subject, such as a computer program, is said to be using ambient authority , if making a request that only specifies the names of the object s involved and the operation to be performed on them, is enough for a permitted action to succeed. In this definition, a name is any way of referring to an object that does not itself include authorising information, and could potentially be used by any subject an action is permitted for a subject if there exists any request that that subject could make that would cause the action to be carried out. The authority is ambient in the sense that it exists in a broadly visible environment often, but not necessarily a global environment where any subject can request it by name. For example, suppose a C program opens a file for read access by executing the call open filename , O RDONLY, 0 The desired file is designated by its name on the filesystem, which does not by itself include authorising information, so the program is exercising ambient authority.
