italic title Systematics and the Origin of Species from the Viewpoint of a Zoologist is a book written by zoologist and evolutionary biologist Ernst Mayr that was first published in 1942. The book became one of the canonical publications on the modern evolutionary synthesis . Based on Mayr s Jesup Lectures delivered at Columbia University in 1941, the book combines concepts of zoology and genetics and features Mayr s species biological species concept . The biological species concept developed by Mayr defines a species in terms of biological factors such as biological reproduction reproduction , taking into account ecology, geography, and life history it remains an important and useful idea in biology, particularly for animal speciation. In December 2004 the United States National Academy of Sciences National Academy of Sciences held a colloquium in honour of Mayr s 100th birthday. Systematics and the Origin of Species On Ernst Mayr s 100th Anniversary was also published in commemoration. As with the other books, the protagonist Reid Malenfant is put through a scenario dealing with the Fermi paradox . Each novel is an alternative scenario rather than a chronological sequel, and does not occur in the same universe. Manifold Origin explores primate evolution to create an explanation for our lack of contact with other intelligent species. The scenario begins when a Portal fiction portal appears in the sky and transports a select few individuals including Malenfant s wife to a new red moon which has appeared in place of the moon we know. Blaming himself, Malenfant launches a mission to find his wife and solve the Fermi Paradox once and for all. Reception Jeff Zaleski was mixed in his review for Publishers Weekly saying that a variety of characters speculate on the simpler aspects of Darwinian theory, but somewhat disappointingly they all reach the same conclusion. Gratuitous violence from time to time offers relief from the challenge of keeping straight the host of loosely related story lines. Image Coordinate with Origin.svg frame right The origin of a Cartesian coordinate system In mathematics , the origin of a Euclidean space is a special Point geometry point , usually denoted by the letter O , used as a fixed point of reference for the geometry of the surrounding space. In a Cartesian coordinate system , the origin is the point where the Coordinate axis axes of the system intersect. In Euclidean geometry , the origin may be chosen freely as any convenient point of reference. The most common coordinate systems are two dimensional contained in a plane mathematics plane and three dimensional contained in a space , composed of two and three perpendicular axes, respectively. The origin divides each of these axes into two halves, a positive and a negative semiaxis. Points can then be located with reference to the origin by giving their numerical coordinates that is, the positions of their projections along each axis, either in the positive or negative direction. The coordinates of the origin are always all zero, for example 0,0 in two dimensions and 0,0,0 in three. The origin of the complex plane can be referred as the point where real axis and imaginary axis intersect each other. In other words, it is the point representing 0 0 i . Clear Symmetry with respect to the origin Image HyperbolaRect01.png 250px thumb right This graph is symmetric with respect to the origin because when reflected over both the x axis and the y axis, the graph looks unchanged. When a graph is symmetric with respect to the origin, it describes a graph that looks the same before and after the graph is rotated 180 degrees. Formally, a graph is symmetric with respect The graphs of an invertible function and its inverse always have the line y x which definitely passes through the origin as the axis of symmetry .
