It is the first Newford novel centering on the recurring character of Jilly Coppercorn, now a middle aged woman. De Lint published a sequel in 2006, Widdershins novel Widdershins , and a 2007 prequel Promises to Keep , the latter of which featured Jilly as a young woman. Background and origin De Lint has said that he had intended to write a novel about Jilly for years, but he had put it off because he didn t relish writing about the child abuse and other nasty experiences Jilly would endure. History The onion pattern was originally named bulb pattern. ref name kovels http www.kovels.com priceguide kovels onion Kovels Onion Pattern ref While modeled closely after a pattern first produced by the Chinese art Chinese the plates and bowls styled in the Meissen factory in 1740 adopted a feel that was distinctly their own. One of the earliest examples is the blue and white porcelains of the early Ming Dynasty in 1420 Because the flowers and fruits pictured on the original Chinese pattern were unknown to the Meissen painters, they created hybrids that resembled more familiar to Europeans. The so called onions are not onions at all, but, according to historians, are most likely mutations of the peach es and pomegranate s modeled on the original Chinese pattern. The whole design is an ingeniously conceived grouping of several floral motifs with stylized peony peonies and Aster genus asters in the pattern s center, the stems of which wind in flowing curves around a bamboo stalk. Artistic period style While the design most likely originated from an east Asia n model, probably Chinese, it also demonstrates that the manner of strictly abstract stylization has a European influence. It is undoubtedly connected with the rhythm and rules of rococo ornamentation for instance, the asymmetrical motif is composed according to type in various areas, and yet at first glance gives the impression of symmetry. ref http www.zwiebelmuster.com story1.htm A Brief History of Zwiebelmuster Onion Pattern Porcelain ref Color The onion pattern was designed as a white ware decorated with cobalt blue pattern. It should be planted between December and January, although depending on the weather can also be planted in February. It can easily succumb to the ills of monocrop production and drop heavily in quality, so it s best when rotated with other crops, not only for nutrition but also to prevent diseases. Another peculiarity is that it requires a dry environment and it is said in Empord , Two days of Tramontane Tramontana wind are better than fertilizing . It reached the top ten overseas, and was a more modest hit in the U.S. Originally assigned to Diana Ross & The Supremes, the song was reassigned to Gaye and Terrell in early 1969. Terrell, then suffering from a brain tumor , was unable to perform onstage after an October, 1967 performance where she fell before being carried offstage by Gaye for medical treatment. She found out she had brain cancer, a result of Terrell experiencing headaches since childhood. For many years, co songwriter Valerie Simpson was reported to have sung on this recording with Gaye. However, Simpson, in recent years, denied the claim, saying she only recorded with Marvin as a vocal guide for Terrell. In David Ritz s biography of Gaye, Divided Soul , Gaye alleged that Simpson sung on the record because Terrell was too ill to record . Terrell was in the studio, it was claimed, but was using a wheelchair . The song, which reflected social consciousness, became Gaye & Terrell s biggest hit in the United Kingdom , entering the singles chart on 29 November 1969 and peaking at 9 on 9 December prior to Terrell s March 16, 1970 death.
