  1. Resource starvation

refimprove date January 2011 In computer science , starvation is a computer multitasking multitasking related problem, where a computer process process is perpetually denied necessary Resource computer science resource s. Without those resources, the program can never finish its task. ref cite book title Modern Operating Systems last Tanenbaum first Andrew year 2001 publisher Prentice Hall isbn 0 13 092641 8 pages 184 185 ref Starvation is usually caused by an overly simplistic scheduling algorithm . The scheduling algorithm, which is part of the Kernel computer science kernel , is supposed to allocate resources equitably that is, the algorithm should allocate resources so that no process perpetually lacks necessary resources. For example, if a not very well designed multi tasking system always switches between the first two tasks while a third never gets to run, then the third task is being starved of CPU time. Many operating system schedulers have the concept of process priority. A high priority process A will run before a low priority process B. If the high priority process process A never blocks, the low priority process B will in some systems never be scheduled it will experience starvation. If there is an even higher priority process X, which is dependent on a result from process B, then process X might never finish, even though it is the most important process in the system. This condition is called a priority inversion . Modern scheduling algorithms normally contain code ... CPU time in order to prevent any process from being subjected to starvation. 1. Starvation (glaciology)

Other uses2 Starvation In glaciology , starvation occurs when a glacier retreat s, not because of temperature increases, but due to precipitation meteorology precipitation so low that the ice flow downward into the zone of ablation exceeds the replenishment from snowfall. Eventually, the ice will move so far down that it either Ice calving calve s into the ocean or melts. When starvation does occur, however, it can almost always be reversed by slight changes in precipitation, such as are brought about by mountain ranges. Thus, even if glaciers do not cover a lowland due to low precipitation, glaciation is almost certain to occur at higher elevations. Occurrences Starvation of continental ice sheets is known to have occurred during the period before the Last Glacial Maximum in many areas of Canada and the West Siberian Plain . It is thought that, after the end of the Eemian Stage , continental ice sheets first formed near or beyond their northern margins that is, in the extreme northwest of Siberia and the Yukon Yukon Territory , Northwest Territories and Nunavut in North America . However, as an ice sheet advances, precipitation at its centre known as a dome tends to become very low because high pressure cell high pressure systems form due to the very cold temperatures above the ice. This meant that at the northern edge of the ice sheets, there was almost no replenishment of the ice, and as it fell to lower elevations, even if it did not melt, it was not being replaced. Thus, as the continental ice sheets of Quaternary glaciations advanced south according to each Milankovitch cycles Milankovitch cycle , their northern edges were starved and it is believed that starvation caused ... were, in effect, starved before they could form at all. 1. Rabbit starvation

Rabbit starvation , also referred to as protein poisoning or mal de caribou , is a form of acute malnutrition caused by excess consumption of any lean meat e.g., rabbit coupled with a lack of other sources of nutrients usually in combination with other stressors, such as severe cold or dry environment. Symptoms include diarrhea , headache, fatigue, low blood pressure and heart rate, and a vague discomfort and hunger that can only be satisfied by consumption of fat or carbohydrate s. Possible mechanisms It has been observed that the human liver cannot metabolise much more than 200 300 g of protein per day, and human kidneys are similarly limited in their capability to remove urea a byproduct of protein catabolism from the bloodstream. Exceeding that amount results in excess levels of amino acids, ammonia hyperammonemia , and or urea in the bloodstream, with potentially fatal consequences, ref Bilsborough S, Mann N. http www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov pubmed 16779921 A review of issues of dietary protein intake in humans , Int J Sport Nutr Exerc Metab. 2006 Apr 16 2 129 52. ref especially if the person switches to a high protein diet without giving time for the levels of his or her hepatic enzymes to upregulate. 1. The Politics of Starvation

The Politics of Starvation is an essay published in 1946 by the English author George Orwell . The essay argues the need to help feed Europeans after the war, and attributes motives to left wingers who oppose the idea. Background Rationing in the United Kingdom was introduced at an early stage of World War II , and did not end completely until 1954. It became stricter after the war ended than during the hostilities, with bread rationing beginning in 1946 and potato rationing in 1947. This was largely because of the need to feed the population of European areas coming under British control, whose economies had been devastated by the fighting. Save Europe Now was an organisation under the aegis of Orwell s publisher Victor Gollancz which was concerned with the relief and reconstruction of Europe after the war. ref http tcbh.oxfordjournals.org cgi content abstract 17 2 230 Matthew Frank The New Morality Victor Gollancz, Save Europe Now and the German Refugee Crisis, 1945 46 Oxford Journals ref The essay first appeared in Tribune magazine Tribune on 18 January 1946 Summary Orwell has received a wad of literature from the Save Europe Now Committee arguing that whereas we are reasonably well off, a good part of Europe is lapsing into brute starvation. He contrasts this with a letter in The Guardian by Philip Joubert de la Fert Air Chief Marshall Sir Philip Joubert which states that on his return to Britain he found the children looking pallid and suety compared with the rosy cheeked youngsters of Denmark and criticises those who would cut present British rations to give more to the Germans. Orwell quotes extensively from the Save Europe Now material on the shortages of food and medicines in places like Austria and Czechoslovakia and Budapest and the breakdown of law and order among children, and reports that the voluntary scheme proposed was discouraged officially. Orphan date April 2012 Starvation Order is an informal name given to an emergency order made by the Irish Government to penalise certain named deserters from its armed forces. The order was the Emergency Powers No. 362 Order 1945, passed on 8 August 1945 under the Irish Emergency Powers Act 1939 . Those affected were over 4,000 men who had deserted during World War II to join the armed forces of belligerent nations in effect those of the Allies , principally Britain. 1. Fuel starvation

Fuel starvation and fuel exhaustion sometimes referred to as fuel depletion are problems that can affect internal combustion engine s fuelled by either Diesel fuel diesel , kerosene , petroleum or any other combustible liquid or gas. If no fuel is available for an engine to burn, it cannot function. All modes of transport powered by such engines can be affected by this problem, but the consequences are most significant when it occurs to aircraft in flight. The remainder of this article discusses primarily fuel starvation and exhaustion issues in aviation. Fuel exhaustion There are two main ways that an engine can run out of fuel Using all of the fuel. The aim was to raise money for the starving people of Ethiopia . The idea of gathering artists together to make a charity record was copied from Bob Geldof s Band Aid band Band Aid project, which was number one in the UK charts at the time Starvation Tam Tam was recorded in December 1984. Band Aid was criticised by some for featuring very few black musicians, and none at all from Africa. The Starvation Tam Tam record was meant to rectify this. Starvation , a cover version of a The Pioneers band Pioneers song, featured a number of musicians associated with the 2 Tone era the group were originally going to be called The 2 Tone All Stars , including members of The Specials , Madness band Madness , UB40 and General Public, as well as The Pioneers themselves. It was produced by Jerry Dammers and recorded at Liquidator Studios in London. Tam Tam Pour L Ethiopie was recorded ... distributed to the charities Oxfam , War On Want and M decins Sans Fronti res .
