Shlomo Ephraim ben Aaron Luntschitz 1550 March 3rd 1619 was a rabbi , poet and meforshim Torah commentator , best known for his Torah commentary Keli Yakar . Biography He was born in Lenczyk also known as Luntschitz and Torah study studied under Solomon Luria in Lublin , and subsequently served as rosh yeshiva dean of the yeshiva in Lvov Lemberg . In 1604 he was appointed rabbi of Prague , a position he filled until his death. In the introduction of his Keli Yakar he relates that the name Shlomo was added to his name during life threatening illness, a common practice in Judaism. Karpas is one of the traditional rituals in the Passover Seder . It refers to the vegetable, usually parsley or celery , that is dipped in liquid usually salt water and eaten. Other customs are to use raw onion, or boiled potato. The word comes from the Greek karpos meaning a fresh raw vegetable. The karpas is traditionally placed on the seder plate on the left side, below the roasted egg. The liquid may be any of the seven which make food capable of becoming ritually impure , although salt water or wine vinegar are usually used. The idea behind the salt water is to symbolize the salty tears that the Jews shed in their slavery in Egypt . The general idea of dipping a vegetable into saltwater is to arouse the curiosity of the children, as per the theme of the Seder night that the story is to be recounted by way of question and answer. Joseph ben Meir Teomim 1727 1792 Hebrew was a Jews of Galicia Galician rabbi born at Lemberg . While still young he succeeded his father in the position of preacher and rabbinical instructor in the yeshivah of Lemberg. Chol HaMoed , lang he a Hebrew language Hebrew phrase meaning weekdays of the festival literal translation the secular non holy part of the occasion , refers to the intermediate days of Passover and Sukkot . During Chol HaMoed the usual 39 categories of activity prohibited on Shabbat restrictions that apply to the Biblical Jewish holiday s are relaxed, but not entirely eliminated. For example, work that would normally be prohibited on the festival would be allowed to prevent financial loss or if the results of the work are needed for the festival itself. Work for public need is also allowed. ref Shulchan Aruch , Orach Chayim , 530 ref If one has the ability to take vacation from work without financial loss during those days, he or she is required to do so. Many tasks such as laundry washing, hair cutting and shaving are to be avoided except in some circumstances. Hallel and Mussaf prayers must be said on these days, as on Yom Tov , although on Chol Hamoed of Passover, an abridged form of Hallel is recited. The tachanun prayer is also omitted. Passover is a seven day festival eight in the Jewish Diaspora Diaspora , of which days second through sixth third through sixth in the Diaspora are Chol HaMoed. Sukkot is a seven day festival, of which days second through seventh third through seventh in the Diaspora are Chol HaMoed. On Chol HaMoed there are four aliyot at the Torah reading in synagogue, as opposed to the standard three of weekdays, pointing to the festive nature of Chol HaMoed. Tefillin On Chol HaMoed, there are variant customs regarding whether tefillin should be worn. He began studying Talmud as a boy. When he was ten years old, Zvi Hirsch Karo , the author of Neta Sha ashu im, chose him as a son in law. At the age of twenty, he became the rabbi at Yazlovets . In the Jewish Encyclopedia , Louis Ginzberg and A. Pelginsky dramatically recount his encounter with Hasidism The chief event of his life was the struggle awakened in him by the opposition between the Talmud and the Kabbalah Cabala . Unacquainted with the tendencies and modes of life of the Hasidim, Buczacz did not believe in the miracles of their rabbis and his wife and friends had great difficulty in persuading him to take his sick son to a Hasidic rabbi, Levi Yitzchok of Berditchev Levi Isaac of Berdychev . The latter, however, influenced him to take up the study of the Cabala but in trying to reconcile these new views&mdash so utterly antagonistic to those of the extreme Talmudists, which he himself had hitherto held&mdash he nearly became insane. The Hasidic rabbi Levi Isaac of Berdychev helped him through this struggle and won him over, to the great joy of the Hasidim, who feared his wide Talmudic learning. Buczacz adopted the Hasidic mode of living but in his decision of Halakhah halakic questions was guided, not by kabalistic, but by purely Talmudic, principles. In 1813 he succeeded his late father in law as rabbi of Buczacz, and remained in office until his death. David Solomon Eibenschutz Hebrew alternate English David Shlomo Eibeschitz was born in Ozerjany , Ukraine in 1755. His father s name was Avigdor. He was a Jews of Russia Russian rabbi and author, a pupil of Rabbi Moses Tzvi Heller the author of Geon Tzvi. He was the first Rabbi of the shtetl of Chorostkov, Poland now Chorostkiv , Ukraine . From 1790 1800, he occupied the position of Rabbi in Bodzanov, Poland now Budaniv , Ukraine . Thereafter, he served as the Rabbi for Soroki, Bessarabia now Soroca, Moldova , and in Jassy now Ia i , Romania . From Iasi, he made aliyah and went to Palestine in 1810 and remained in Safed until his death on 19 November 1813. He was the author of many kabalistic and Talmudical works, which still exist in manuscript. He also wrote Levushei Serad, in two parts. The first part contains a commentary on the Shulchan Aruch , Orach Chayim , with comments on David ben Samuel s Turei Zahav and Abraham Abele Gumbiner s Magen Avrohom at the end of this part is added the plan of the Temple in Jerusalem Temple as described by Ezekiel Mohilev, 1818, and frequently reprinted . The second part is on Shulchan Aruch , Yoreh De ah Mohilev, 1812 . His Ne os Deshe is a compilation of 138 responsa , in two parts, the first of which was published in Lemberg, 1861, while the second is in manuscript. Arvei Nachal is also in two parts, the first being a treatise on the Pentateuch , the second consisting of sermons Kopust, Sdilkov, 1835 Krotoschin, 1840 Jitomir, 1850 Lemberg, 1856 .
