  1. Orris Oil

Multiple issues wikify March 2012 unreferenced December 2009 orphan April 2008 Orris Root Concrete Botanical Name Iris germanica Common Name s Orris Butter, or Beurre d Iris Country of Origin France Orris oil is an essential oil derived from iris plant irises . It is sometimes used as a flavoring agent and as an ingredient in some perfumes. They are uses in body lotions as well. The rhizomes Root should be stored well protected against fungus and insect attack, for three years. The fresh rhizomes are almost odorless. The distilled oil solidifies in the receiver to a wax like , cream colored mass known as Orris Concrete. It is solid because of its high content of myristic acid, a white, sterin like substance. Orris Concrete melts at about body temperature, and has a woody, fatty oily but distinctly violet like odor, with a truity undertone, sweet floral , warm & tenacious. Orris Concrete is used in perfumery as such when the presence of myristic acid is not prohibitive, e.g. in soap perfumes where the weak acid only acts as a fixative. Also note, the methyl and ethyl esteres of myristic acid are often used as blenders in violet type perfume bases. Because of the high cost of Orris concrete it limits its application to a certain degree, but even small percentages of this exquisite material lends very fine effects to various perfume types other than the old fashioned violet. 1. Orris root

File Sousbinne souw .jpg thumb Dried orris roots Orris root is a term used for the roots Iris germanica , Iris florentina , and Iris pallida . Once important in western herbal medicine , it is now used mainly as a fixative and note perfumery base note in perfumery , as well as an ingredient in many brands of gin . It s also the most widely used fixative for potpourri . Fabienne Pavia, in her book L univers des Parfums 1995, ed. Solar , states that in the manufacturing of perfumes using orris, the scent of the iris root differs from that of the flower. After preparation the scent is reminiscent of the smell of violets. After an initial drying period, which can take five years or more depending on the use, the root is ground. For potpourri, this powder is used without further processing. For other uses, it s dissolved in water and then distilled. One ton of iris root produces two kilos of essential oil, also referred to as orris root butter, making it a highly prized substance, and its fragrance has been described as tenaciously flowery, heavy and woody Paraphrasing Pavia, Dutch translation, page 40 .
