  1. Esso Northumbria

unreferenced date October 2009 The Esso Northumbria was the first of a series of VLCC Very Large Crude Carrier ships, built by Swan Hunter at Wallsend on Tyneside , in 1969. Launched on 2 May 1969 by HRH Anne, Princess Royal The Princess Anne was the largest vessel to have been built in Britain at that time. Its tonnage was 253,000 tonnes and its length was 1,350  ft. The ship was designed to carry crude oil from the Persian Gulf, and its large design was a result of the Suez Crisis , which had resulted in the closing of the Suez Canal . The ship was single hulled and was designed with relatively limited knowledge of the behaviours of such large structures at sea, being generally a straightforward scaling up of a smaller design. It was also built to a fixed price contract at a time when rampant inflation was occurring in Britain. This led to many attempts to cut costs Swan Hunter ultimately made a loss on the contract. Final cost of the ship was 6.5 million. Unfortunately the ship was plagued with problems both with its fittings and more seriously, with cracking of the hull under stress. It needed many repairs in its short working lifetime and this, together with fears of a major spill, prompted its retirement in 1982 after only 13 years in service. The ship was broken up at Kaoshiung , Taiwan . A similar fate befell its sister ship, the Hibernia , also built on Tyneside and launched in 1970. Here Northumbria is taken to mean Northumberland , the northernmost county of England , and County Durham . Northumbrian music is characterised by considerable influence from other regions, particularly southern Scotland and other parts of the north of England. ref S. Broughton, M. Ellingham, R. Trillo, O. 1. Æthelred II of Northumbria

thelred was king of Northumbria . He was the son of Eanred of Northumbria Eanred . Relatively little is known of his reign from the surviving documentary record. He appears to have been expelled in favour of R dwulf of Northumbria R dwulf , whose reign is confirmed by the evidence of coins coinage . However, R dwulf was killed the same year, fighting against Vikings , and thelred was restored to power. He was assassinated a few years later, but no further details are known of his murder. The dating of thelred s reign is extremely problematic. According to the written sources, he was expelled in 844 and assassinated in 849, but recent reinterpretations of ninth century Northumbrian chronology based on numismatic evidence argue for his reign beginning circa c. 854, his expulsion having taken place c. 858, and his assassination c. 862. The new styca coinage, small brass coins containing very little silver and much zinc , which began in his father s reign, continued in thelred s. Large numbers of his styca coins have been found, again minted in York by a number of moneyer s. A moneyer active in this period named Eardwulf was sometimes confused with thelred s grandfather King Eardwulf of Northumbria Eardwulf in older works on numismatics. Written and numismatic evidence agrees that thelred was succeeded by Osberht of Northumbria Osberht . References Higham, N.J., The Kingdom of Northumbria AD 350 1100. Stroud Sutton, 1993. 1. Osred II of Northumbria

Osred was king of Northumbria from 789 to 790. He was the son of Alhred of Northumbria Alhred and Osgifu, daughter of Eadberht of Northumbria Eadberht . He succeeded lfwald I of Northumbria lfwald , son of his mother s brother Oswulf of Northumbria Oswulf , who was murdered by the patricius ealdorman Sicga . Osred, even though he united two of the competing factions in Northumbria, was king for only a year before being deposed in favour of the previously deposed thelred I of Northumbria thelred son of thelwald Moll of Northumbria thelwald Moll . Osred was then exiled, apparently to the Isle of Man . He returned from exile in 792, and the Anglo Saxon Chronicle reports that he was apprehended and slain on the eighteenth day before the calends of October. His body is deposited at Tynemouth. Eadwulf s relationship, if any, to the ruling dynasty descendants of Ida of Bernicia Ida is not known, but it is quite possible that he was indeed of royal descent as two or more other branches of the Eoppingas are found as kings of Northumbria after the extinction of the main line. Initially Eadwulf appears to have had the support of ealdorman Berhtfrith son of Berhtred, presumed to be the lord of the north east frontier of Bernicia, in Lothian ..., a crisis soon arose. 1. Ecgberht II of Northumbria

Ecgberht was a king in Northumbria in the later Ninth century. Very little is known of his reign. Unlike his predecessor King Ricsige of Northumbria Ricsige , who may have ruled most of the kingdom of Northumbria following the expulsion of the first King Ecgberht I of Northumbria Ecgberht in 872, this Ecgberht ruled only the northern part of Northumbria, the lands beyond the River Tyne Tyne in northern England and southern Scotland . The northern frontier of Ecgberht s kingdom is uncertain. Ricsige s death and Ecgberht s coming to power is recorded by Symeon of Durham , who writes, that in 876 blockquote The pagan king Halfdene divided between himself and his followers the country of the Northumbrians. 1. Northumbria's Golden Age

nofootnotes date May 2009 The Northumbrian Renaissance or Northumbria s Golden Age is the name given to a period of cultural flowering in the Anglo Saxon kingdom of Northumbria , broadly speaking from the mid seventh to the mid eighth centuries. It is characterised by a blend of insular art , Germanic art and Mediterranean influence. Authors associated with this golden age include Bede and Alcuin artefacts include the Lindisfarne Gospels and associated manuscripts, the Ruthwell Cross and associated sculptures, and, arguably, the Franks Casket . An illustration of the cultural activity of Northumbria during this period is given by Alcuin s De Sanctis et Pontificibus Ecclesi Eboracensis , which gives particular attention to Bishop thelbert of York . 1. Ælfwald II of Northumbria

lfwald is said to have been king of Northumbria following the deposition of Eardwulf of Northumbria Eardwulf in 806. This information is only reported in the anonymous tract De primo Saxonum adventu and the later Flores Historiarum of Roger of Wendover . Roger states that lfwald had overthrown Eardwulf. lfwald is said to have reigned for two years and probably succeeded by Eardwulf, restored to power with the aid of the Emperor Charlemagne and Pope Leo III , although he may instead have been followed by Eardwulf s son Eanred of Northumbria Eanred rather than by Eardwulf. While written sources for lfwald s reign are late and exiguous, coins minted in his reign have survived in modest numbers. Minted at York , these were produced by a moneyer named Cuthheard, who also produced all known coins of Eardwulf s reign. Lake District Lakeland author W. G. Collingwood 1917 book The Likeness of King Elfwald A Study of Iona and Northumbria imagined the life of lfwald. The work, based on Collingwood s long study of Northumbria which led to his 1919 work Northumbrian Crosses of the pre Norman Age , was well regarded and has been reprinted. 1. Osred I of Northumbria

Osred c. 697 &ndash 716 was king of Northumbria from 705 until his death. He was the son of King Aldfrith of Northumbria . Aldfrith s only known wife was Cuthburg , but it is not certainly known whether Osred was her son. Osred did not directly succeed his father as Eadwulf of Northumbria Eadwulf seized the throne, but held it for only a few months. At the time that the usurper Eadwulf was overthrown, Osred was only a child, and the government was controlled by the powerful Bishop Wilfrid , presumably assisted by Ealdorman ealdormen such as Berhtfrith son of Berhtred. Osred was adopted as Wilfrid s son at this time. Wilfrid s death in 709 appears to have caused no instability at the time, which, together with the rapid rise and more rapid fall of Eadwulf, speaks to a degree of stability and continuity in early 8th century Northumbria which would not long outlast Osred s reign. In 711 ealdorman Berhtfrith inflicted a crushing defeat on the Picts , in the area around the upper River Forth Forth , but the reign of Osred is otherwise unremarkable politically. Domestically, a variety of ecclesiastical sources portray Osred as a dissolute and debauched young man, and a seducer of nuns. More positively, Aethelwulf s De Abbatibus describes Osred as energetic in deeds and words, mighty in arms and bold in his own strength and Bede referred to him as a new Josiah . 1. Eadwulf II of Northumbria

Eadulf or Eadwulf died 913 was a ruler in Northumbria in the early tenth century. The history of Northumbria in the ninth and tenth centuries is poorly recorded. England English sources generally date from the twelfth century although some more nearly contemporary Irish annals report some events in Northumbria. Numismatic evidence&mdash mints at York continued to produce coins throughout the period&mdash is of considerable importance, although not in the period of Eadulf s presumed floruit as a new style of coinage appeared in Northumbria between 905 and 927 approximately. These coins bore the name of the city of York and the legend Saint Peter s money but no kings are named, so that they are of no help in determining the succession of rulers. The only thing which can be said with reasonable certainty of Eadwulf is that he died in 913 in Northumbria, an event recorded by the chronicle of thelweard historian thelweard and by the Ireland Irish Annals of Ulster and Annals of Clonmacnoise .
