Oskar Kallis Tallinn , November 23, 1892 Yalta , 1 January 1918 was one of the main representatives of the Estonian national romanticism. He studied in 1907 and 1913 to 1916 in the studio of the artist Ants Laikmaa , and in 1912 1913 studied design at the Estonian Artist Society Eesti Kunstiselts . He participated in 1917 in the establishment of the artistic association Vikerla . He was particularly influenced by the Finnish painter Akseli Gallen Kallela , he devoted himself especially in his short career to the illustration the Estonian national epic Kalevipoeg , creating about 40 works. Russian sources sometimes give his dates of birth and death as April 16, 1846 and August 16, 1916, since Russia still used the Julian calendar at the time. Life He was born in L nghem, in V sterg tland , Sweden and graduated from Uppsala University in 1872. In 1876 he emigrated to Russia. He worked at Dorpat Observatory , in today s Tartu , Estonia , and then in 1879 worked at Pulkovo Observatory , becoming director of the observatory from 1895 until his death. He specialized in celestial mechanics , and notably worked on calculating the orbit of Comet Encke , taking into account the perturbations of various planets. He used observations of Comet Encke to try estimate the mass of Mercury planet Mercury . Russian sources sometimes referred to the comet as Comet Encke Backlund. He also carried out geodesy geodesic studies in Spitsbergen from 1898 to 1900.
