The most common bone tumor is called osteosarcoma , which usually affects older dogs or giant breed dogs. Osteosarcoma seems to be rare in cats. Osteosarcoma is an aggressive cancer that can develop in any bone of the body but the majority is seen in the limbs eg elbow or the knee . Signs and symptoms Dogs with limb osteosarcoma typically show lameness and swelling at the affected site. For other sites, dogs may show difficulty to open their mouth if jaw bone cancer , nasal discharge if nasal cavity bone cancer or neurological signs if spine bone cancer . Diagnosis The initial evaluation involves X rays of the affected site, but the only way to confirm the diagnosis is by tissue biopsy . ref name MacEwan 2001 cite book author Withrow SJ, MacEwen EG, eds title Small Animal Clinical Oncology edition 3rd ed. publisher W.B. Codman triangle previously referred to as Codman s triangle is a term used to describe the triangular area of new subperiosteal bone that is created when a lesion, often a tumour, raises the periosteum away from the bone. ref name gpnotebook http www.gpnotebook.co.uk cache 288358364.htm General Practioner s notebook ref A Codman triangle is not actually a full triangle. Instead it is often a pseudotriangle on radiographic findings with ossification on the original bone and one additional side of the triangle which forms a two sided triangle with one open side. This two sided appearance in generated due to a tumor or growth that is growing at a rate which is faster than the periosteum can grow or expand, so instead of dimpling, the periosteum tears away and provides ossification on the second edge of the triangle. ref name PeriostealReaction http www.rad.washington.edu academics academic sections msk teaching materials online musculoskeletal radiology book periosteal reaction Periosteal Reaction ref The main causes for this sign are osteosarcoma , Ewing s sarcoma , eumycetoma , and a subperiosteal abscess . ref name Periosteal Ewing sarcoma http www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov pubmed 8184073 Periosteal Ewing sarcoma ref ref name Imaging in Classic Osteosarcoma http emedicine.medscape.com article 393927 overview Imaging in Classic Osteosarcoma ref References references med stub Category Skeletal system Eponymous medical signs for integumentary and musculoskeletal systems ja pl Ostroga Codmana pt Tri ngulo de Codman ... more details

Interventions infobox Name PAGENAME Image Hemipelvectomy gas gangrene.jpg Caption Hemipelvectomy being performed on a patient suffering from gas gangrene . ICD10 ICD9 ICD9 mult MeshID D006428 OPS301 OtherCodes A hemipelvectomy is a high level pelvic amputation . Along with hip disarticulations, hemipelvectomies are the rarest of lower extremity amputations. In some cases, an internal hemipelvectomy can be performed, which is a limb sparing procedure. A complete hemipelvectomy, however, is the amputation of half of the pelvis and the leg on that side. This type of procedure is also called transpelvic amputation . Hemipelvectomies may be required for several reasons, such as a car accident or cancer. Examples of cancers that can require hemipelvectomies are sarcoma s like Ewing s Sarcoma , osteosarcoma or chondrosarcoma . People who have experienced a hemipelvectomy may or may not be able to use a prosthesis . They may use adaptive devices such as a wheelchair , underarm crutches , forearm crutches, or, in the case of internal hemipelvectomies, a Cane medical device cane . Physical therapy can be useful to those with hemipelvectomies to build strength and prevent problems like back pain and scoliosis . Because a hemipelvectomy is a rare type of amputation, it is important that the physical therapist is trained in the special needs of a post hemipelvectomy patient. There are two types of hemipelvectomy External Amputation of the whole leg plus the pelvis on that side. The other name for external hemipelvectomy is called a hindquarter amputation.
