To the east are the craters Kundt crater Kundt and Davy crater Davy . The surviving rim of Guericke has been worn, battered, and partly submerged by the basalt ic lava that covers the floor. The wall is now little more than a circular series of ridges that join with rises that flow to the north, northwest, and south. The flooded crater remnant Guericke F is attached to the southwest exterior. The interior flood has a few small rises in the otherwise nearly flat surface. Biography Johann Otto von Gemmingen was born in Tiefenbronn on October 23, 1545, the fourth child of Hans Dietrich von Gemmingen and his wife Magdalena. He probably spent his early years in the Weinfelden Castle, before his father sold it to the Fugger family in 1555. He studied in Italy before enrolling in the University of Ingolstadt in 1565. He became a Canon priest canon of Augsburg Cathedral in 1565 and of Eichst tt Cathedral in 1568. He became the Dean Christianity dean of Augsburg Cathedral in 1580 and was Holy Orders ordained as a Priesthood Catholic Church priest in 1581. The cathedral chapter of Eichst tt Cathedral elected him as Bishop of Eichst tt in 1590, but declined because he wanted to stay in Augsburg . His nephew, Johann Konrad von Gemmingen , was subsequently elected as Bishop of Eichst tt. The cathedral chapter of Augsburg Cathedral elected him Prince Bishopric of Augsburg Bishop of Augsburg on March 21, 1591. Pope Gregory XIV confirmed his appointment on May 10, 1591, and he was consecrated as a bishop on August 25, 1591. As bishop, Johann Otto promoted Roman Catholicism and introduced many reforms. He promoted the use of the catechism of Petrus Canisius in the Bishopric of Augsburg. He also established many charitable works.
