In summer the bend became too shallow to be navigable, and so between 1701 and 1709 was cut off from the main waterway near the town of Lobith and replaced by the Pannerdens Kanaal . update date November 2010 Leidsche Rijn is a neighbourhood under construction west of Utrecht city Utrecht in the central Netherlands . The whole project consists of two city parts, namely Leidsche Rijn and Vleuten De Meern. The neighbourhood is expected to be completed in 2025 and will have approximately 80,000 inhabitants. By 2007 the neighbourhoods of Veldhuizen, Parkwijk, Langerak and large parts of Terwijde were already occupied. During construction several archeological remains were discovered. In 1997 and in 2003 Roman ships were discovered in the neighbourhood of De Balije and in 2002 and 2003 Roman watchtowers were discovered in the neighbourhoods of Vleuterweide and Het Zand. Currently there are plans for a controversial skyscraper called Belle van Zuylen . This skyscraper would if constructed be 262 metres in height and will replace the Dom Tower of Utrecht Dom Tower as the highest structure in the city of Utrecht. Unreferenced date August 2009 Image Oude Bildtdijk.jpg right thumb 300px view on a western part of the Oude Bildtdijk The Oude Bildtdijk , Ouwe dyk in the local language Het Bildts was the first dike in the Dutch county Het Bildt , built in the 16th century, to protect the new lands from flooding. Het Bildt once was part of the Middelzee and even until this day land silts up and new lands are being given by the Waddenzee . This dike was the first barrier to protect the Bildt area from the sea. The Nieuwe Bildtdijk that was built in the 17th century made the Oude Bildtijk lose its protective function. Also, the Nieuwe Bildtdijk eventually lost its function when an even higher and stronger dike was thrown up in the 20th century. Nowadays, a narrow road runs over the dike and many houses and farmhouses are situated mainly on the northern side along and of this dike. From the year 1546, under the rule of emperor Carl V, it was only allowed to build houses on the northern side of the dikes. Only with approval of the emperor was it allowed to build on the south side. Not more than two houses have been built on the south side, of which only one still exists this day, number 237. This rule was to protect the precious land from housing, so it would be used for farming only. It is a right tributary of the river IJssel . Oude IJssel means Old IJssel in Dutch the Oude IJssel was the upper course of the IJssel until the connection with the Rhine was dug, possibly in the Roman era . Since that moment the Rhine became the largest contributor to the flow of the IJssel, although only a relatively small amount of the total Rhine flow made its way into the IJssel system. Various tributaries can sometimes add quite some water to the total flow of the river, for example the Berkel and the Schipbeek . The IJssel river is the only branch of the Rhine Meuse Scheldt delta Rhine delta that consumes tributary rivers instead of giving birth to distributary rivers. The latter only happens at the very last part of the river, where the small IJssel Delta is created. History The hydrological distribution of the Maas changed during the later Middle Ages, when a major flood forced it to shift its main course towards the Merwede river. However, during another series of severe floods the Maas found an additional path towards the sea near Geertruidenberg , resulting in the creation of the Biesbosch wetlands and Hollands Diep estuaries. Thereafter, the Maas split near Heusden into two main distributaries, one flowing north to join the Merwede, and one flowing directly to the sea. This latter branch is the current Oude Maasje. The branch eventually silted up, and in 1904 a new parallel channel was dug in the drainage basin, the Bergse Maas . This channel then took over the functions of the silted up branch, which has since been known as the Oude Maasje. At the same time, the branch leading to the Merwede was damned at Heusden, and has since been known as the Afgedamde Maas so that the vast majority of water from the Maas now enters the old Hollands Diep estaury, rather than mixing with the Rhine distributaries. Like many old river beds in the Netherlands, the Oude Maasje now primarily acts to drain the surrounding fields, and does not receive water from the Maas river. However, it drains into the Bergse Maas near Geertruidenberg, therefore retaining a connection with the Maas.
