For hotels and resorts company Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Unreferenced date October 2009 Image Outrigger on Hawaiian sailing canoe.png 200px thumb Outrigger on a contemporary Hawaiian sailing canoe An outrigger is a part of a boat s rigging which is rigid and extends beyond the side or gunwale of a boat. In an outrigger canoe and in sailboats such as the proa , an outrigger is a thin, long, solid, hull ship hull used to stabilise an inherently unstable main hull. The outrigger is positioned rigidly and parallel to the main hull so that the main hull is less likely to capsize . If only one outrigger is used on a vessel, its weight reduces the tendency to capsize in one direction and its buoyancy reduces the tendency in the other direction. Rowing In a Watercraft rowing rowing boat or galley , an outrigger or just rigger is a triangular frame that holds the rowlock into which the oar is slotted away from the gunwale to optimize leverage. Wooden outriggers appear on the new Trireme around the 7th or 6th centuries BC and later on Italian galleys around AD 1300 Citation needed date October 2007 while Harry Clasper 1812 1870 , a United Kingdom British professional rower, popularised the use of the modern metal version. 1. Sprint canoe

Image Canoeing.JPG thumb 250px right C 1 sprint canoe, with K 1 sprint kayak behind. A sprint canoe is a special type of canoe used in the sport of canoe racing flatwater canoe racing . A one person sprint canoe is 5.20 metres long a traveling canoe of a similar length would be suitable for 2 to 3 people with gear. Sprint canoes are paddled while kneeling on one knee a person paddling on the left would kneel on their left knee , and the paddler never switches sides this leads to constant j stroking a C 1. Typical boat types are C 1, C 2, C 4 and C 15 War canoe . There are two variants for C 4, the Canadian C 4 and the International C 4. The Canadian C 4 is fairly squat and wide, while the International C 4 retains the long and narrow hull of other racing canoes and kayaks. The War Canoe is found mostly in North America , while all other events enjoy some popularity internationally, with concentrations in North America and Europe . Sprint canoes are extremely specialized they are designed only to go fast on flat water in a straight line, with little or no provision for Stability conditions watercraft stability . Any high winds, waves, or currents will make these boats very difficult to handle, and could easily result in a capsize. As such, they are somewhat difficult to learn, as even the most stable C 1 will likely be the least stable boat a beginner has ever tried. Often beginners will start out in a larger, more stable boat, such as a C 4, to learn proper technique before trying a C 1. A sprint kayak is very similar to a sprint canoe. A single is around 520  cm long, and generally just a bit wider than the athlete s hips. They also do not have any provision for stability ... basic styles of canoe delta, futura, and 2001. 1. White Canoe

wikify date January 2012 White Canoe was a wood and canvas canoe manufacturer founded in 1888 by E.M. White . It was purchased by Old Town Canoe in 1984. The company s construction methods evolved from the manufacture of birchbark canoes. An external waterproofed canvas shell was fastened to a wooden hull formed with white cedar plank s and rib s. The transition from birchbark to canvas occurred in the 19th century when canoe builders in Ontario laid canvas instead of bark into a traditional building bed, and later when builders in Maine adapted English boat building inverted forms technology. The earliest commercial builder of wood and canvas canoe may have been Evan H. Gerrish of Bangor, Maine , a hunting and fishing guide from Brownwille, Maine . Upriver at Gilman Falls , E.M. White started producing canoes in 1888 . White gave an interview in 1901 in the Old Town Enterprise, saying I saw a man by the name of Evan Gerrish of Bangor riding in the Penobscot River in a canvas covered canoe. I quickly saw the advantages of that kind over my birchbark, which moreover leaked. I examined the canvas canoe closely, and in a short time was able to produce one which was so good someone wanted to buy it. White started building canoes at his Gilman Falls family home by boiling wooden ribs in his mother s washtub and using a horse on a treadmill for power. White s brother in law, E.L. Hinckley, became a working partner and provided the capital to open a large shop in nearby Old Town, Maine , an area where Old Town Canoe was established. ref The Wood and Canvas Canoe, by Jerry Stelmok and Rollin Thurlow, pp. 24 25, Harpswell Press, Gardiner, Maine, 1987, ISBN 0 88448 046 1 ref References Reflist Category Canoes ...   more details
