PH contains almost all well known complexity classes inside PSPACE in particular, it contains P complexity P , NP complexity NP , and co NP . It even contains probabilistic classes such as Bounded error probabilistic polynomial BPP and RP complexity RP . However, there is some evidence that BQP , the class of problems solvable in polynomial time by a quantum computer , is not contained in PH Aaronson 2010 . P NP if and only if P PH . 1. PH partition

unreferenced date December 2010 pH partition is the tendency for acid s to accumulate in basic fluid compartment s, and chemical base bases to accumulate in acidic compartments. The reason for this phenomenon is that acids become negatively electric charge d in basic fluids, since they donate a proton . On the other hand, bases become positively electric charged in acid fluids, since they receive a proton. Since electric charge decrease the membrane permeability of substances, once an acid enters a basic fluid and becomes electrically charged, then it cannot escape that compartment with ease and therefore accumulates, and vice versa with bases. It was first published in the July 1972 issue of Ellery Queen s Mystery Magazine under the title The Phony Ph.D. The reason for this title change was that the magazine ran a series by Lawrence Treat with similar is for titles. When it was republished in Tales of the Black Widowers in 1974, the original title was restored. It is the second published story about the Black Widowers , a gentlemen s club that solves mysteries. Plot Summary Dr. Thomas Trumbull, as the evening s host, brings a Doctor Doctor Arnold Stacey to dinner. Note the rules of the club dictate that all members and guests receive the title of doctor, so all with doctorates are known as doctor doctor. Upon questioning by James Drake, it is revealed that Stacey s lesser doctorate is in chemistry, and that he teaches at the university where Drake got his doctorate. br This prompts Drake to discuss a student in his classes, a Lance Faron, who he believes to have cheated on his finals in a class, even though the system was airtight, the questions were all based on things students got wrong in class, and the boy s classmates watched him constantly. He received a 96 on a course known to be the most difficult in the school, and the professor backed him when he used it as a reason to apply for his Ph.D. The members of the club make several suggestions as to the method by which he cheated. br Finally, Henry speaks up. He asks if it were not possible that the student gave the teacher the answers, instead of the other way around, and that he had written the test based on what he had observed his fellow students struggling with. br Characters Black Widowers Geoffrey Avalon Patent attorney described as tall and patrician Thomas Trumbull Code expert of an unknown level loud and argumentative in nature Emmanuel Rubin Free lance author talkative, self centered, finicky about food , and argumentative Mario ...   more details

  1. PH-sensitive polymers

Unreferenced date February 2007 orphan date November 2009 pH sensitive or pH responsive polymers are materials which will respond to the changes in the pH of the surrounding medium by varying their dimensions. Such materials swell or collapse depending on the pH of their environment. This behaviour is exhibited due to the presence of certain functional groups in the polymer chain. Image PSP.JPG pH sensitive polymer There are two kinds of pH sensitive materials one which have acidic group COOH, SO sub 3 sub H and swell in basic pH, and others which have basic groups NH sub 2 sub and swell in acidic pH. Polyacrylic acid is an example of the former and Chitosan is an example of the latter. The mechanism of response is same for both, just the stimuli vary. The response is triggered due to the presence of ionisable functional groups like COOH, NH sub 2 sub which get ionized and acquire a charge in a certain pH. The polymer chains now have many similarly charged groups which causes repulsion and hence the material expands in dimensions. The opposite happens when pH changes and the functional groups lose their charge hence the repulsion is gone and the material collapses back. These materials are being extensively used in controlled drug delivery systems, biomimetics and responsive plasmonics. 1. Impedance-pH monitoring

Impedance pH monitoring is a technique used in the diagnosis of gastroesophageal reflux disease . ref name pmid19281866 cite journal author Pritchett JM, Aslam M, Slaughter JC, Ness RM, Garrett CG, Vaezi MF title Efficacy of Esophageal Impedance pH Monitoring in Patients With Refractory Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, on and off Therapy journal Clin. Gastroenterol. Hepatol. volume 7 issue 7 pages 743 8 year 2009 month March pmid 19281866 doi 10.1016 j.cgh.2009.02.022 url http linkinghub.elsevier.com retrieve pii S1542 3565 09 00199 2 ref Patients with ongoing symptoms while on PPI therapy are commonly diagnosed with impedance pH monitoring while continuing their medications. The impedance pH monitoring diagnostic test determines the frequency of reflux episodes and the time relationship of reflux episodes and symptoms. The impedance pH monitoring test determines if the patient s symptoms are related to acid reflux , related to nonacid reflux , or not related to reflux of any type. A positive GERD diagnosis is made if acid or nonacid reflux precedes symptoms in a statistically meaningful manner. Patients with a positive impedance pH monitoring test may benefit from acid reduction therapy such as fundoplication surgery or endoscopic fundoplication techniques. 1. Immobilized pH gradient

Context date October 2009 Immobilized pH gradient IPG gel s are the acrylamide gel matrix Polymerization co polymerized with the pH gradient, which result in completely stable gradients except the most alkaline 12 pH values. The immobilized pH gradient is obtained by the continuous change in the ratio of Immobilines . An Immobiline is a weak acid or Base chemistry base defined by its pK value. ref Barnes et al., Electrophoresis in Practice A Guide to theory and Practice. Page 44. VCH Publishers Inc, 1993 USA ref This alternative method eliminates the problems of gradient instability and poor sample loading capacity associated with carrier ampholyte pH gradient. ref Wilkins et al., Proteome Research New Frontiers in Functional Genomics.
