Plot Summary Dr. Thomas Trumbull, as the evening s host, brings a Doctor Doctor Arnold Stacey to dinner. Note the rules of the club dictate that all members and guests receive the title of doctor, so all with doctorates are known as doctor doctor. Upon questioning by James Drake, it is revealed that Stacey s lesser doctorate is in chemistry, and that he teaches at the university where Drake got his doctorate. br This prompts Drake to discuss a student in his classes, a Lance Faron, who he believes to have cheated on his finals in a class, even though the system was airtight, the questions were all based on things students got wrong in class, and the boy s classmates watched him constantly. He received a 96 on a course known to be the most difficult in the school, and the professor backed him when he used it as a reason to apply for his Ph.D. The members of the club make several suggestions as to the method by which he cheated. br Finally, Henry speaks up. Such materials swell or collapse depending on the pH of their environment. This behaviour is exhibited due to the presence of certain functional groups in the polymer chain. Image PSP.JPG pH sensitive polymer There are two kinds of pH sensitive materials one which have acidic group COOH, SO sub 3 sub H and swell in basic pH, and others which have basic groups NH sub 2 sub and swell in acidic pH. Polyacrylic acid is an example of the former and Chitosan is an example of the latter. The mechanism of response is same for both, just the stimuli vary. The response is triggered due to the presence of ionisable functional groups like COOH, NH sub 2 sub which get ionized and acquire a charge in a certain pH. The polymer chains now have many similarly charged groups which causes repulsion and hence the material expands in dimensions. The opposite happens when pH changes and the functional groups lose their charge hence the repulsion is gone and the material collapses back. These materials are being extensively used in controlled drug delivery systems, biomimetics and responsive plasmonics.
