  1. Pangenesis

Refimprove date July 2007 Pangenesis was Charles Darwin s hypothetical mechanism for heredity . He presented this provisional hypothesis in his 1868 work The Variation of Animals and Plants under Domestication and felt that it brought together a multitude of facts which are at present left disconnected by any efficient cause . The etymology of the word comes from the Greek language Greek words pan a prefix meaning whole , encompassing and genesis birth or genos origin . Much of Darwin s pangenesis theory was speculatively based on inheritance of tiny heredity particles he called gemmules that could be transmitted from parent to offspring. Darwin emphasized that only cells could regenerate new tissues or generate new organisms. He posited that atomic sized gemmules formed by cells would diffuse and aggregate in the reproductive organs. ref name Darwin68 cite book last Darwin first Charles year 1868 title The variation of animals and plants under domestication publication place London publisher John Murray url http darwin online.org.uk content frameset?itemID F880.1&viewtype text&pageseq 1 accessdate 2011 08 11 ref harv isbn 1 4191 8660 4 ref Overview Darwin s pangenesis theory was complex as he tried to explain the process of sexual reproduction, passing of traits and complex developmental biology developmental phenomena, such as cellular Regeneration biology regeneration . ref name ... of his hypothesis of pangenesis journal J Hist Med Allied Sci volume XXIV issue 4 pages 375 411 doi ... 6 ref His pangenesis theory was criticised for its Lamarkism Lamarckian premise that parents could ... of Darwin s pangenesis principles in this regard do relate to heritable aspects of phenotypic plasticity ... of pangenesis. 1. Gemmule

About the internal buds of freshwater sponges the proposed mechanism of heredity Gemmule pangenesis Gemmules are internal bud s found in sea sponge sponge s that are the result of asexual reproduction , and are a response to a hostile environment. They are resistant to desiccation drying out , freezing, and Hypoxia medical anoxia lack of oxygen and can lie around for long periods of time. These are similar to a bacterium s endospore . Gemmules are made up of amoebocytes surrounded by a layer of Sponge spicule spicules and can survive conditions that would kill adult sponges. When the environment becomes less hostile, the gemmule resumes growing. References Feldkamp, Susan 2002 . Modern Biology. United States Holt, Rinehart, and Winston. p.  695. Accessed on May 23, 2006. 1. Neo-Darwinism

Neo Darwinism is the Modern evolutionary synthesis modern synthesis of Charles Darwin Darwinian evolution through natural selection with Mendelian genetics , the latter being a set of primary tenets specifying that evolution involves the transmission of characteristics from parent to child through the mechanism of Genetics genetic transfer, rather than the blending process of pre Mendelian evolutionary science. Neo Darwinism also separates Darwin s ideas of natural selection from his hypothesis of Pangenesis as a Lamarckism Lamarckian source of variation involving blending inheritance. ref name Kutschera cite journal author Kutschera U, Niklas KJ title The modern theory of biological evolution an expanded synthesis journal Naturwissenschaften volume 91 issue 6 pages 255 76 year 2004 pmid 15241603 doi 10.1007 s00114 004 0515 y ref As part of the disagreement about whether natural selection alone was sufficient to explain speciation , George Romanes coined the term neo Darwinism to refer to the version of evolution advocated by Alfred Russel Wallace and August Weismann with its heavy dependence on natural selection. ref name Gould216 Gould The Structure of Evolutionary Theory p. 216 ref Weismann and Wallace rejected the Lamarckian idea of inheritance of acquired characteristics, something that Darwin had not ruled out. ref http www.springerlink.com content f6131358k265g3u4 Kutschera U. 2003.
