Pansy Napangardi was born at Haasts Bluff in the late 1940s and was moved with the settlement to Papunya in the early 1960s. She is a painter in what is today known as the Papunya Tula movement. She is from the Warlpiri language group. Although she observed the men s painting business there, she is one of the rare women associated with Papunya Tula who did not serve an apprenticeship with the men. The Sea pansy is a collection of polyps with different forms and functions. A single, giant polyp up to two inches in diameter forms the anchoring stem peduncle . This peduncle can be distended to better anchor the colony biology colony in the substrate. The pansy like body bears many small, sea anemone anemone like feeding polyps. A cluster of tentacle less polyps form an outlet valve that releases water to deflate the colony. If the colony is on a sand bar at low tide, it usually deflates and becomes covered with a thin film of silty sand. Small white dots between the feeding polyps are polyps that act as pumps to expand the deflated colony. The feeding polyps secrete a sticky mucus to trap tiny organisms suspended in the water. Orphan date February 2009 Flemmie Pansy Kittrell December 25, 1904, Henderson, North Carolina October 3, 1980 was the first African American woman to earn a Ph.D. in nutrition. Her research focused on such topics as the levels of protein requirements in adults, the proper feeding of black infants, and the importance of preschool enrichment experiences for children. Early life Kittrell was born to James and Alice Kittrell. Education was very important to the Kittrell family she and her eight siblings were encouraged to do well in school and praised for their accomplishments. Her father often read stories and poems to the family. Flemmie graduated from high school with honors and received a B.S. degree from Hampton Institute in Hampton, Virginia in 1928. Her professors at Hampton encouraged her to continue her studies of science and home economics in graduate school. During a period when there were very few female graduate students, Kittrell accepted a scholarship to Cornell University . When she arrived at Cornell, Kittrell was not allowed in the dormitory and was told to seek off campus housing. She promptly went to see the president of the university, who instructed the dean of women to find Kittrell a place in the women s dorm. She finished her M.S. in 1930, and received a Ph.D. in nutrition in 1936. Career Dr. Kittrell went on to become the dean of women and head of the department of home economics at Hampton Institute. ln 1944, she left Hampton to become head of the home economics department at the prestigious Howard University in Washington, D. C. Here she developed a broader curriculum for home economics that included child development.
