for the Tom Stoppard play On the Razzle play On the razzle is a euphemism often used in the British press to describe the actions of a celebrity who has drunk, or is about to drink, a considerable amount of alcohol . A night on the razzle does not carry completely negative connotations it is only used to describe someone as having enjoyed themselves. There are two theories as to the origin of the phrase. One theory is that it came about during World War I , when ships were often painted in bright zigzag patterns to confuse German Empire German U boat s. Sailors often came back on the supply ships from North America after consuming a large quantity of alcohol, and were therefore said to be on the razzle. Another theory is that there was a gin parlour notorious for the extreme merriment of its customers in London during the 1750s. Its proprietor, who called himself Dash Razzall, was an unscrupulous man of Italy Italian descent. It is unclear as to how his name mutated into razzle, but his gin parlour was renowned for the amount of alcohol consumed, and that after he went bankrupt his family moved to Sussex , where they became renowned as being prone to overindulge. Playwright Tom Stoppard used this phrase as the title of a 1981 farce , On the Razzle play On the Razzle , which he adapted from an earlier play by Johann Nestroy . Unreferenced date November 2008 Infobox Game subject name Are you there Moriarty? image link image caption players 2 or more ages 5 and up setup time less than 5 minutes playing time Approx 1 minute per round complexity Low strategy Low random chance High skills dexterity footnotes Are you there Moriarty? is a parlour game in which two players at a time participate in a duel of sorts. Each player is blindfold blindfolded and given a rolled up newspaper or anything that comes handy and is not likely to injure to use as a weapon . The players then lie on their fronts head to head with about three feet one metre of space between them or in other versions hold outstretched hands, or stand holding hands as in a handshake. The starting player says Are you there Moriarty? . The other player, when ready, says Yes . At this point the start player attempts to hit the other player with his newspaper by swinging it over his head. The other player then attempts to hit the starting player with his newspaper. The first player to be hit is eliminated from the game and another player takes his place. The wiktionary objective objective of the game is to remain in the game as long as possible. There is a small amount of strategy to the game. In order to avoid being hit, each player may roll to one side or the other. The decision of which direction to roll, or whether to roll at all often determines whether the player is hit by his opponent. A player who can quickly roll out of the way after speaking or striking will have a definite advantage in the game. However, like most parlour games, the appeal of this game largely lies in its spectacle and humor rather than its strategy. coord 52.5430 2.5123 display title region GB scale 2000 Aston Eyre Hall is an unfortified stone manor house at Aston Eyre near Bridgnorth in the England English county of Shropshire , United Kingdom . History Aston Eyre Hall was built in the mid 14th century, probably for Alan de Charlton , who acquired the estate by marriage to Margery FitzAer and died in 1349. It consists of a hall range, with a service wing to the south west and a parlour cross wing to the north, and a detached gatehouse to the east, across what would have been an unusually large entrance court. The gatehouse has been incorporated into a farmhouse, but tree ring dendrochronology dating of the surviving timber floors have suggested a felling date of 1341 52. A large timber framed barn enclosing the courtyard on the north has been similarly dated to 1613. The hall dais was originally lit from a large window bay, which has been demolished although traces remain. There must have been a central hearth in the hall. Both the parlour wing and the south range had heated upper chambers. The narrow extension of the south range has several slit windows for storerooms, and excavations have revealed the footings of an equally narrow west range, no doubt also used for storage.
