The barque was owned by the White Diamond Line and was registered in Boston , the port where she was built. The Ocean Monarch was built at the East Boston shipyard of Donald McKay in July 1848. Burning of the Ocean Monarch Ocean Monarch had left Liverpool on the morning of Thursday, 24 August 1848 carrying passengers to Boston in the United States United States of America . Helmed by a Captain Murdoch, the Ocean Monarch was towed from the port and entered the open sea around eight o clock in the morning. Not far from harbour, between Abergele Bay and Great Orme Great Orme s Head off Llandudno , at around noon, the Ocean Monarch was witnessed to put up its helm as if to return to port and then a flag of distress was raised. Within a short time flames were seen rising towards the rear of the vessel. In an attempt to control the fire, which was now a blaze, Captain Murdoch attempted to turn the ship up wind, but in failing to do so, dropped both anchors. At this time it was apparent that the crew had lost control of the passengers who had begun fleeing the fire, rushing around deck in panic and even throwing themselves overboard. The captain ordered all moveable spar s overboard to give those passengers in the water an aid in flotation. Two other vessels in the area, came immediately to the ships aid, they were the yacht Queen of the Ocean , captained by Mr. Thomas Littledale and the Brazil ian frigate Affonso , captained by J.M.Lisboa.     Frederick Ludlow born 1796, date of death unknown was an early colony colonial settler in Western Australia . He is credited with the discovery of the Capel River . Frederick Ludlow was born in 1796. In 1828, he and his wife Mildred Kitty emigrated to Western Australia as servants of Captain Mark John Currie , arriving in Perth, Western Australia Perth on board the Parmelia barque Parmelia in June 1829. In April 1830, Ludlow joined a group including the Molloys and the Bussell family Bussells in forming a new settlement at Augusta, Western Australia Augusta . The following year, Ludlow walked from Augusta to Perth in company with John Kellam and John Welburn . Although much undiscovered land would have been traversed, no journal was kept so no discoveries were attributed to the men. In June 1834, Ludlow made the same journey, this time on his own. Ludlow kept a journal of his travels, and was consequently credited with the discovery of much new land. In particular, he is credited with the discovery of the Capel River, although he did not give it a name. Ludlow later took up land in the Vasse, Western Australia Vasse , much of which is now known as the Ludlow Tuart Forest in the Tuart Forest National Park . Both the Ludlow River and the town of Ludlow, Western Australia Ludlow are named after him. Born in 1814, most probably in Cork, Ireland, James Drummond was the son of botanist James Drummond botanist James Drummond . Nothing is known of his early life, but in 1829 the family emigrated to the Swan River Colony in what is now Western Australia, arriving on board the Parmelia barque Parmelia on 1 June. For much of his early life James Drummond helped farm the family s land grants in the Swan River Colony land grants , first on the Swan River Western Australia Swan River and after 1836 at their Hawthornden grant at Toodyay, Western Australia Toodyay . Shortly after relocating to Toodyay, Drummond obtained a tract of land adjoining the family grant, becoming a land owner in his own right. He then built the Toodyay district s first flour mill on the site. In 1841 and 1842, he went on a number of exploring expeditions with Captain John Scully . During the early 1840s, Drummond s father and brother Johnston Drummond Johnston became increasingly involved in botanical collecting, and his brother John Drummond Australian settler John was appointed Inspector of Native Police at York, Western Australia . Born in 1788 in Enniskillen , Ireland , Frederick Chidley Irwin was the son of Reverend James Irwin. In 1808, he was Officer armed forces commissioned into the 83rd Regiment of Foot . He saw service in Spain and Portugal , and took part in several major battles of the Peninsula War , for which he was awarded a number of medals. In 1817 he was stationed in Canada , and later in Ceylon . In 1828, the United Kingdom British government decided to establish a colony on the western coast of Australia , and a cousin of Irwin s, James Stirling Australian governor James Stirling , was appointed its first Governor of Western Australia Lieutenant Governor . Irwin was subsequently sent to the colony as a major in command of a detachment of the 63rd Regiment of Foot , whose mission was to protect and help establish the colony. He arrived with his men on board HMS Sulphur 1826 HMS Sulphur in June 1829, six days after the arrival of the first settlers and Stirling on the Parmelia barque Parmelia . http adbonline.anu.edu.au biogs A020006b.htm Irwin s position as officer commanding the troops afforded him the further position of vice chairman of the Western Australian Legislative Council Legislative Council appointed by Stirling in January 1831.
