cleanup date July 2010 File PassingOn.jpg thumb right 1st edition publ. Andre Deutsch Passing On is a novel written by Penelope Lively in 1989. It tells the sensitive and intimate story of how a brother and sister s lives change after their imperious mother dies. The story is set in the South of England in the late eighties. Plot The book starts with a funeral. The atmosphere is not, as one would assume, oppressive, but rather buoyant. When the coffin is carried to the graveyard, Helen remarks that her mother is still, even after her death, making her presence felt. As her mother had had a row with the priest when choosing the grave years ago, he keeps casting Helen and her brother distrustful looks throughout the funeral. From the very beginning of the book it is clear that Dorothy Glovers must have been a nasty woman. A woman who did not treat her children with love and affection, but ruled them and deprived them of life s pleasures. Only Louise, her youngest daughter, had had the strength to escape from her dominant influence. When the ceremony of burying is held at the grave and the priest is giving his sermon, Helen thinks Eternal life is an appalling idea, especially in mother s case. Slowly but steadily, Helen and Edward get used to their mother s absence and they start to slightly change their lives. Helen feels much freer than before her mother s death and falls in love with Giles Carnaby, their lawyer. She becomes more confident and starts to perceive life differently. Nevertheless, Dorothy, Helen s and Edward s mother still, even after her death, makes her presence felt. At one point, Helen finds love letters that a former boyfriend of hers had written to her in one of her mother s old cloaks. Her mother had never given these letters to her and therefore had caused the separation of Helen and her boyfriend. Helen is upset, but has to come to terms with it she cannot confront her mother anymore. Edwards is a biology teacher. His mother s does not change much ... more details

The Passing Parade , a.k.a. John Nesbitt s Passing Parade , was an American radio series created, written, and narrated by John Nesbitt announcer John Nesbitt which was adapted into an Academy Award Oscar winning series of MGM short subjects . In both media, the series usually focused on strange but true historical events, both little known and famous, as well as figures such as Catherine de Medici and Nostradamus . Passing Parade on radio The radio series, developed as an outgrowth of an earlier Nesbitt produced program Headlines of the Past , was launched on the NBC network on February 1, 1937, running off and on until 1951 over three different networks and in syndication. Nesbitt s inspiration was a trunk left to him by his father which contained news clippings of odd stories from around the world. Nesbitt, who usually presented his stories without sound effects or music, utilized a research staff of fourteen people in verifying the details of his tales, but wrote the final scripts himself, often within an hour of airtime. ref name dunning cite book last Dunning first John authorlink coauthors title On The Air The Encyclopedia of Old Time Radio publisher Oxford University Press date 1998 location New York pages 533 url doi id isbn 0195076788 ref Radio producer announcer John Doremus later acquired the rights to the series and revived it as a late 1950s early 1960s syndicated feature, billing his version as from the files of John Nesbitt. Refimprove date December 2009 The passing pocket is a term used in American football to describe the area in the backfield that is created on a passing play where the offensive line forms a wall of protection around the quarterback to protect him. This allows him adequate time to find an open wide receiver receiver and to pass the ball. The offensive line will drop back slightly, creating a protected area for the quarterback to find an open receiver and get rid of the ball. If he is unable to find an open receiver he will attempt to run the ball himself, throw the ball out of bounds to prevent a sack and or turnover, or if there is no lane, he would collapse to the ground to protect the ball and try to avoid a fumble . The term is typically referred to as The quarterback steps up into the pocket. Even with a well structured offensive line, the quarterback only has seconds to pass the ball within the tackle box. Quarterbacks may scramble outside of the tackle box, either to gain more time for the wide receivers, to avoid a Quarterback sack sack , or to Rush American football rush the ball. Tackle box structure The tackle box itself can be formed using different types of protections to keep the quarterback safe. The five man protection is used most often and it only involves the five offensive linemen. The offensive tackles set the depth of the tackle box by kick sliding back to around six yards. The guards are next and they will drop back to around three to four yards and watch for any extra rushers. The center will identify the middle linebacker and make sure he does not rush.
