Oliphant backed Ahmad Jamal in 1952 and Sarah Vaughan in the late 1950s, then worked with Gloria Lynne and Shirley Scott . He released two soul jazz albums as a leader on Atlantic Records in the 1960s. The Grass Roots , released in 1965, saw Oliphant working with saxophonist Harold Ousley , vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson , and bassist Major Holley . His 1968 release The Grass Is Greener featured John Patton on organ, Grant Green on guitar, and Clark Terry on trumpet, in addition to Ousley and Holley again. The Grass Is Greener has been repeatedly sampled by hip hop artists. Both albums were reissued on CD by Collectables Records as a single disc in 2005. After an almost 40 years hiatus from music, working as the manager of a golf course, Oliphant resumed playing in the 2000s decade , this time in the New Jersey area. During his 2007 NAMM oral history interview, Oliphant spoke about his early days in jazz and the many changes he has witnessed during his career, especially those related to the development of instruments and musical products. Biography Oliphant fought at the battle of Dunbar 1296 Battle of Dunbar in 1296, where the Scots, under their king John of Scotland John Balliol , were defeated by the invading English. Following the battle he was captured and taken to Devizes in England where he was imprisoned. He was eventually released, and returned to Scotland where he was appointed to the position of Constable of Stirling Castle . Sir William led the 30 strong garrison which defended Stirling Castle during the Sieges of Stirling Castle siege of 1304 , when the castle was attacked by the forces of Edward I of England . He and his garrison eventually surrendered to the English. He was captured once again, this time being imprisoned in the Tower of London . Shortly after arriving there, he wrote to the university s president, Nicholas Murray Butler , outlining some plans he had for reorganizing the curriculum of the law school. Essentially, his goal was to transform the school into a research center, placing particular emphasis on the interaction of the law and other social sciences.
