  1. Pathovar

A pathovar is a bacteria l strain or set of strains with the same or similar characteristics, that is differentiated at infrasubspecific level from other strains of the same species or subspecies on the basis of distinctive pathogenicity to one or more plant hosts. Pathovars are named as a ternary or quaternary addition to the species binomial name, for example the bacterium that causes citrus canker Xanthomonas axonopodis , has several pathovars with different host ranges, X. axonopodis pv. citri is one of them the abbreviation pv. means pathovar. An example is Stem rust Puccinia graminis . Forma specialis is abbreviated f. sp. , br formae speciales is abbreviated ff. spp. . 1. Syringomycin

Syringomycin is a general name given to a class of lipodepsinonapeptide molecules which are secreted by the plant pathogen Pseudomonas syringae . Lipodepsinonapeptides comprise a closed ring of nine nonribosomally synthesized amino acid s bonded to a fatty acid hydrocarbon tail ref Scholz Schroeder B.K., Soule J.D., and Gross D. C. 2003. The sypA, sypS, and sypC synthetase genes encode twenty two modules involved in the nonribosomal peptide synthesis of syringopeptin by Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae B301D. Mol Plant Microbe Interact. 16 271 80 ref . A commonly encountered pathovar pv of P. syringae is P. syringae pv syringae , which secretes a number of closely related forms of the molecule. Syringomycins are virulence determinants, which means that their secretion is required for the manifestation of disease symptoms on a number of stone fruit crop plants. Syringomycins have two widely recognized mechanisms of action ref Hutchison, M. L., Tester, M. A., and Gross D. C. 1995. Role of biosurfactant and ion channel forming activities of syringomycin in transmembrane ion flux A model for the mechanism of action in the plant pathogen interaction. Mol. Pl. Microb. Interact. 8 610 620. ref . They can function as detergent s which are powerful enough to dissolve plant membranes at high concentrations. It is not clear whether concentrations high enough to dissolve membranes are ever reached in planta . In addition to being surfactants, aggregates of syringomycins can insert into plant cell membrane s and form small pores. These pores allow the leakage of ions from the plant cell cytoplasm . Affected plant cells are unable to maintain their required levels of electrolyte and ultimately cell death and lysis occurs. It is believed that P. syringae benefits from the release of nutrients that occurs as a consequence of cellular lysis. 1. Bleeding Canker of Horse Chestnut

Bleeding Canker of Horse Chestnut is a common canker of horse chestnut trees Aesculus hippocastanum , also known as Conker tree conker trees that is known to be caused by infection with several different pathogens. Infections by the gram negative fluorescent bacterium Pseudomonas syringae pathovar aesculi are a new phenomenon, and have caused most of the bleeding cankers on horse chestnut that are now frequently seen in Britain. ref name FRsymptoms Causes Pseudomonas syringae pathovar aesculi In the past few years, the bacterial pathogen Pseudomonas syringae Pathovars Pseudomonas syringae pv. aesculi has a emerged as a new and virulent agent for this disease in Western Europe. Specific to horse chestnut trees, this pathogen infects the bark Cambium botany cambium around the trunk and main branches. As it spreads, it cuts off the water supply to the crown and when it completely encircles the trunk, the tree will die. ref name FRsymptoms This particular infective agent emerged in the past few years, and has now spread rapidly to infect many trees in Western Europe. ref name FRextent Initially the outbreak was attributed to Phytophthora , until DNA tests suggested that a pathovar of Pseudomonas syringae was responsible and this hypothesis was confirmed in 2007 with tests satisfying Koch s postulates . ref name FRsymptoms ref name BSPP cite web title Isolation and identification of Pseudomonas syringae pv. aesculi causing bleeding canker of horse chestnut in the UK author J.F. Dye 12 July 1921&ndash 18 December 2005 was a New Zealand microbiologist. Dye began work with the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research DSIR in 1946 and for the first 10 years of his career, worked as a pathologist on the pathogenic bacteria of crops in New Zealand. From 1956 till 1958, he studied in Edinburgh for his PhD, the subject of which was the taxonomy of Xanthomonas . It was this meticulous work, showing the absence of phenotypic diversity between specific pathogens in this genus, that led to the development of pathovar nomenclature, applied internationally to plant pathogenic bacteria today. Subsequently, Dye clarified the relationships within the major bacterial groups represented by Erwinia and Corynebacterium . Dye worked on several committees connected with bacterial taxonomy, most notably the International Committee on the Systematics of Bacteria, participating in the complete revision of bacterial names contained in the Approved Lists of Names of Bacteria, and the Committee on Taxonomy of Plant Pathogenic Bacteria of the International Society for Plant Pathology, which developed the International Standards for Naming Pathovars. From the late 1960s, as head of an expanding Bacteriology Section in Plant Diseases Division of DSIR, he maintained a day to day interest in wide ranging studies of his staff.
