Unreferenced date December 2009 Donald Carnegie McKenna was an American philanthropist and scholar best remembered for his contributions to the liberal arts college in Claremont, California , which now bears his name Claremont McKenna College . McKenna s family moved to Claremont in 1918. There he met and, on June 7, 1928, married Bernice Waller. He went on to graduate from Pomona College , which his grandfather had helped to found, in 1929. McKenna played a key role in the founding of what was initially called Claremont Men s College in the mid 1940s. He continued to contribute to the development of the College as a member of the board of directors for the rest of his life. Seeking more opportunities than could be found in such a rural part of the country at the height of the Great Depression , McKenna joined the U.S. Navy in 1931. McKenna served in the Navy for 22 years, including 10 years of active sea duty. He served in both World War II and the Korean War , and retired shortly afterwards as a Chief Petty Officer Chief Machinist s Mate . Due to the benefits of the GI Bill GI bill , McKenna was able to attend college at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, North Carolina Chapel Hill , where he studied creative writing. He also married a librarian, Eva, whom he met at the college. Writing career McKenna began his writing career publishing science fiction . Dennis Jon McKenna born December 17, 1950 is an United States American ethnopharmacology ethnopharmacologist , author and brother to well known psychedelics proponent Terence McKenna . Profile McKenna s research led to the development of natural products for Aveda Corporation as well as greater awareness of natural products and medicine s. He has authored numerous scientific articles and books. He co authored The Invisible Landscape with his brother Terence and Botanical Medicines the Desk Reference for Major Herbal Supplements with Kenneth Jones and Kerry Hughes. McKenna spent a number of years as a senior lecturer for the Center for Spirituality and Healing, part of the Academic Health Center at the University of Minnesota , Minneapolis Saint Paul Twin Cities . He is now a senior research scientist for the Natural Health Products Research Group at the British Columbia Institute of Technology in the Vancouver area. McKenna received his Master s degree in botany at the University of Hawaii in 1979.
