Pauline Menczer born 21 May 1970 is an Australian surfer . She won the 1988 women s amateur world title and the 1993 women s world championship and has been a long standing competitor on the world championship tour. In 1991 Menczer was narrowly beaten in the world championship by Wendy Botha , but blitzed the field in 1993 becoming the world champion. To date she has been competing for 20 years and won a total of 20 World championship tour WCT surfing WCT events and 8 WQS events only Layne Beachley has won more. She also was world Amateur in 1988 and world WQS champion in 2002 Menczer failed to requalify for the 2005 World championship tour WCT surfing world championship tour . Pauline Smith was born on 2 April 1882 in Oudtshoorn , South Africa, and grew up in the Little Karoo. At the age of thirteen she was sent to boarding school in England and never lived permanently in South Africa again, though throughout her life she made a number of extended visits to the country. Her extended visit of 1913 1914, and the journal that she kept, formed the basis of many stories of the Little Karoo and her novel The Beadle. In 1908 she met the English novelist Arnold Bennett , who encouraged her to write fiction about South Africa. Eventually she published the two works for which she s best known the story collection The Little Karoo 1925 , and the novel The Beadle 1926 . She died on 29 January 1959 in Dorset , England . Obituary New York Times Friday March 21 1919 Pauline Markham, a veteran actress, who was known throughout the country many years ago, died yesterday from hardening of the arteries at her residence, 438 West 23rd Street, after a long illness. She retired from the stage thirty years ago when her leg was broken. In private she was Mrs. Jean Gravel. She was born in 1847 in England, where she made her stage debut when still a child. She came to New York and appeared in the famous Black Crook of Niblo s Garden fame. With the closing of the Black Crook, she played in Pinafore. For several years before her retirement Miss Markham appeared in a dramatic sketch with Catherine Dana, making her last appearance at Tony Pastors s.
