Joseph s wife or probably, one of many wives was the daughter of the king of the Alans . Whether Joseph was the Khagan or the Khagan Bek Bek of the Khazars is contested among historians. He describes leading Khazar armies which seems to imply the role of the Bek. However, as he does not refer to a co ruler in his writings, it is possible that by his time the two king system had been abandoned altogether. see Khazar Khazar kingship Khazar Kingship . Joseph actively sought contact with Jews elsewhere in the diaspora . He Khazar Correspondence corresponded with Hasdai ibn Shaprut , a rabbi in C rdoba, Spain Cordoba , and invited him to settle in Khazaria . He is also mentioned in the Schechter Letter . Joseph was involved in wars against the Kievan Rus and the Pechenegs , as well as sporadic fighting with the Byzantine Empire Byzantines in the Crimea . He reported that he was allied with the Muslim states around the Caspian Sea against Varangian marauders from Rus and Scandinavia . Joseph s ultimate fate is unknown. As the destruction of the Khazar empire by Sviatoslav I of Kiev occurred soon after his correspondence with Hasdai in 967 or 969 , it is possible that Joseph was ruler during the Khaganate s collapse. Chirpici is a traditional construction material made out of clay and straw , used especially on the steppes of southern Romania , in the B r gan Plain , but also in other lowlands of Oltenia , Moldavia and Dobruja . The Romanian word chirpici is derived from a Turkic tr Kerpi kerpi , as several Turkic tribes notably the Cumans and Pechenegs came from Central Asia and settled in the B r gan. As they were less numerous than the Romanians Citation needed date August 2011 , they were assimilated, but kept the way they made chirpici. Citation needed date August 2011 Traditionally, Romanian houses require wood, which is used both for construction some types of houses in Maramure and Bukovina were made exclusively out of wood and also for the firing of brick s. Wood is plentiful in the hilly and mountainous regions of Romania, but in the B r gan steppe and other lowlands, neither wood nor rock can be easily found and in the Middle Ages it was not practical to transport these materials hundreds of kilometres. As such, the chirpici bricks used for construction are made out of clay , with straw and manure and are baked in the sun before they are used. The result is not as hardy as regular bricks and it becomes less so with time. It is also especially vulnerable during floods. Since cement and mechanized transportation have become available, chirpici is no longer used on such a large scale, although it remains in use in some parts of the B r gan Plain, which is one of the least developed areas of Romania. The Great German Pilgrimage of 1064 1065 was a large pilgrimage to Jerusalem which took place a generation before the First Crusade . It originated in Germany in 1064, and was led by Archbishop Siegfried I Archbishop of Mainz Siegfried of Mainz , Bishop William I, Bishop of Utrecht William of Utrecht , Bishop Otto of Ratisbon, and Bishop Gunther of Bamberg. There were between seven and twelve thousand pilgrims on the journey. The pilgrimage passed through Hungary , Bulgaria , Pechenegs Patzinakia , and Constantinople , just as the First Crusade would over thirty years later, with similar results the pilgrims were treated harshly wherever they went, and were ushered off into Anatolia once they reached Constantinople. They passed through Anatolia, which had not yet been conquered by the Sultanate of Rum Seljuk Turks , as it was by the time of the crusade. Their troubles increased when they reached Latakia there they met other pilgrims who warned them of the dangers to the south, and when they reached Tripoli, Lebanon Tripoli , they were attacked by the emir of the city, but were saved by a storm which they regarded as a miracle . On Holy Thursday they reached Caesarea Maritima Caesarea , and on Good Friday they were attacked by Bedouin bandits. William of Utrecht was killed in battle, according to the Annales Altahenses Maiores although he actually survived and lived until 1076 . The pilgrims fled to a nearby fort, and on Easter Sunday there was a truce and the Bedouin leaders met with Gunther, but they threatened to kill the pilgrims anyway. Gunther had them killed and hung over the walls, as a deterrent to further attacks. On Easter Monday the Fatimid governor of Ramla drove off the Bedouins and freed the pilgrims, who then rested in Ramla for two weeks. They arrived in Jerusalem on April 12. After thirteen days they returned to Ramla, and later took ships back to Latakia and returned to Germany. Sources Annales Altahenses Maiores , 8, a. 1065, Monumenta Germaniae H ... more details
