Horses of Achilles Poseidon gave the two horses to King Peleus of Phtia, as a wedding gift, when Peleus married the Ocean goddess Thetis . Peleus later gave the horses to his son Achilles who took them to draw his chariot during the Trojan War . Book XVI of the Iliad tells us that Achilles had a third horse, Pedasos maybe Jumper , maybe Captive , which was yoked as a trace horse , along with Xanthus and Balios. Achilles had captured Pedasos when he took the city of Eetion. Pedasos was mortal, but he could keep up with the divine horses. Sarpedon , prince of Lycia and ally of Troy, killed Pedasos when his spear missed Patroclus. Achilles comrade in arms Patroclus used to feed and groom these horses. 1. Peleiades

Peleiades Ancient Greek Greek lang grc , dove s were the sacred women of Zeus and the Mother Goddess , Dione mythology Dione , at the Oracle at Dodona . Pindar made a reference to the Pleiades mythology Pleiades as the peleiades a flock of doves, but the connection seems witty and poetical, rather than mythic. The chariot of Aphrodite was drawn by a flock of doves, however. A mythic element of a black dove that initiated the oracle at Dodona , which Herodotus was told in the 5th century BC may be an attempt to account for a folk etymology applied to the archaic name of the sacred women that no longer made sense an aitiological myth . Perhaps the pel element in their name was originally connected with black or muddy root elements in names like Peleus or Pelops and peliganes Epirotian, Macedonian senators , Attic polios , Doric peleios grey, old, PIE pel , gray . 1. Candaon

orphan date March 2010 In Greek mythology, Candaon is a rare name of uncertain meaning. In the Alexandra of Lycophron , a long and obscure poem, there is a reference to a human sacrifice conducted with the three fathered sword of Candaon . ref Lycophron, Alexandra l.328 ref The scholia to Lycophron explain this as a transferred epithet Candaon is Orion mythology Orion , who was begotten, in a curious manner, by Zeus, Hermes and Poseidon. ref Lycophronis Alexandra. Recensuit Eduardus Scheer. Berlin, Weidmann, 1881 1908. Vol II Scholia, p 130, l.9 ref It is not clear from the context whether the sacrifice is that of Polyxena by Neoptolemus or that of Iphigeneia by Agamemnon . In the first case, Candaon would be Hephaestus , who made the sword for Peleus , who gave it to Neoptolemus. In the second, three fathered refers to the generations of the Atreidae Agamemnon s sword is likely to have as long a narrative attached to it as his staff. Candaon may still be Orion Pelops may well have acquired his sword.
