  1. Penultimate Hop Popping

Unreferenced date December 2009 Penultimate Hop Popping PHP is a function performed by certain routers in an Multiprotocol Label Switching MPLS enabled network. It refers to the process whereby the outermost label of an MPLS tagged packet is removed by a Label Switch Router LSR before the packet is passed to an adjacent Label Edge Router LER . The process is important in a MPLS VPN Layer 3 MPLS VPN RFC2547 environment as it reduces the load on the LER. If this process didn t happen, the LER would have to perform at least 2 label lookups The outer label, identifying that the packet was destined to have its label stripped on this router. The inner label, to identify which VRF Virtual Routing Forwarding VRF instance to use for the subsequent IP routing lookup. In a large network this can result in the CPU load on the LER reaching unacceptable levels. By having PHP for an LER done on the LSRs connected to it, the load is effectively distributed among its neighbour routers. PHP functionality is achieved by the LER advertising a label with a value of 3 to its neighbours. This label is defined as implicit null and informs the neighbouring LSR s to perform PHP . 1. Popping Stone

The Popping Stone is a group of three rounded boulders in the Irthing Gorge near the town of Gilsland . It was not always this shape, however, and photographs from before 1870 show a single, much larger stone that must have been drastically altered soon after this date. Nearly all written references to the Popping Stone mention various traditions associated with courtship and marriage proposals, and usually repeat the legend of Sir Walter Scott s proposal to Margaret Carpenter there in 1797. Close to the Popping Stone was an ancient, gnarled Common Hawthorn Hawthorn tree named the Kissing Bush, but Aln noted that in the early 1940s that this has been cut down. 1. Pre-popping

Pre popping is a method of transferring lead information from one online lead form to another. This method is most commonly used for internet marketing between a publisher and an advertiser in the lead generation industry. User Experience The user experience with the pre popping method is that a user fills out a lead form on a publisher website before he leaves the publisher domain and upon clicking on the submit button he is redirected to the landing page of the advertiser where a similar or a longer form is already populated with the same information he already entered. Benefits The benefit of pre popping to the publisher is that only users who are very interested in the offer are leaving the website so the post click conversion rates are high so he enjoys higher commissions while allowing more users to stay on his site and make him revenue in other ways. The benefits of pre popping to the advertiser is that he only gets high value users so conversion rates and user values are high. In the risk taking scale, pre popping can be placed between CPC and CPL . Pre popping means that the publisher is taking more risk compared to CPM or CPC and less than CPL , CPA , CPS or rev sharing while the advertiser assumes the higher risk with CPM and CPL compared pre popping. Implementation The technical aspects of pre popping are quite simple. The information is normally transferred as a query string which is an extension to the URL of the landing page . On the publisher side, it requires an advertisement in the form of a banner that presents a few fields to the user and validates the user input before allowing him to click submit . This can be implemented in flash Action script, SWF or in Java Script . On the advertiser side, this can be easily done with a java script code. Recursive transition network RTNs are finite state machines that can be seen as finite state automata extended with a stack data structure stack of return states as well as consuming transitions and math varepsilon math transitions, Recursive transition network RTNs may define call transitions. These transitions perform a subroutine jump by pushing the transition s target state onto the stack and bringing the machine to the called state. 1. Hop-by-hop transport

Citation style date September 2009 Hop by hop transport is a principle of controlling the flow of data in a network. With hop by hop transport, chunks of data are forwarded from node to node in a store and forward manner. As hop by hop transport involves not only the source and destination node, but rather some or all of the intermediate nodes as well, it allows data to be forwarded even if the path between source and destination is not permanently connected during communication. However, the End to end principle claims that transport control should be implemented end to end unless implementing hop by hop transport achieves considerably better performance. Moreover, hop by hop transport requires per flow state information at intermediate nodes, which limits its scalability. This is one of the reasons why almost all communication today is controlled by end to end transport protocols such as Transmission Control Protocol TCP . Current research in the area of sparse mobile networks is considering hop by hop transport for application scenarios where end to end connectivity is only available intermittently, as under such conditions, hop by hop transport can achieve substantial performance gains. 1. Hop count

In Computer networks computer networking , hop count refers to the intermediate devices like routers through which data must pass between source and destination, rather than flowing directly over a single wire. ref cite web title Hop Count url http www.infocellar.com networks ip hop count.htm publisher Infocellar.com ref Each router along the data path constitutes a Hop networking hop , as the data is moved from one Layer 3 network to another. Hop count is therefore a basic measurement of distance in an network. File Hop count trans.png thumb right An illustration of hops in a network. The hop count between the computers in this case is 2. By itself, hop count is not a useful metric for determining the optimum network path, as it does not take into consideration the Bandwidth computing speed , load, reliability, or latency of any particular hop, but merely the total count. Nevertheless, some routing protocol s such as Routing Information Protocol RIP use hop count as their sole metric. ref RFC 1058, Routing Information Protocol , C. Hendrik, The Internet Society June 1988 ref Hop counts are often useful to find faults in a network, or to discover if routing is indeed correct. Network utilities like Ping can be used to determine the hop count to a specific destination. Ping generates packets that include a field reserved for the hop count. Each time a capable device receives these packets, that device modifies the packet, incrementing the hop count by one. In addition, the device compares the hop count against a predetermined limit and discards the packet if its hop count is too high. This prevents packets from endlessly bouncing around the network due to routing errors. Both routers and bridges are capable of managing hop counts, but other types of intermediate devices like hubs are not. 1. Sock hop

Unreferenced date December 2009 Wiktionary The sock hop was an informal sponsored dance at American high school s, typically held in the high school s own gym or cafeteria . The term sock hop came about because dancers were required to remove their shoes to protect the varnished floor of the gymnasium. These hops were a cultural feature of the 1950s and early rock and roll . The music was usually records, sometimes presented by a disc jockey . Occasionally there were also live bands. Danny and the Juniors sang At the Hop in 1957 which named many popular dances and otherwise documented what happened at a hop. The term record hop is generally synonymous with sock hop . In subsequent decades, with the widespread popularity of sneakers and other types of indoors only shoes, the practice of removing shoes was dropped and the term began to be applied more generally to any informal high school dance. 1. Hop (networking)

Data packets often have to go through Router computing router s more generally Gateway telecommunications gateway s , if not several, before they reach their final destination. Each time packets are passed to the next router a hop occurs. To see how many hops it takes to get from one host to another ping or traceroute tracepath commands can be used . Hop Count The distance between two hosts. The hop count n means that n gateways separate the source host from the destination host. Hop Limit In IPv4 known as time to live , and Hop Limit in IPv6 , this field specifies a limit on the number of hops a packet is allowed before it should be discarded. This prevents packets from following a loop forever. Next Hop Routing term used for the next gateway to which packets should be forwarded along the path to their final destination. One technique to make content of a routing table smaller is called next hop routing . Next Hop Forwarding A routing table usually contains the IP address of a destination network and the IP address of the next gateway next hop along the path to the final network destination. Using a routing table to store a next hop for each known destination is called next hop forwarding . Therefore a given gateway only knows one step along the path, not the complete path to a destination. It is also key to know that the next hops listed in a routing table are on networks to which the gateway is directly connected to. References Comer, Douglas E. Opened in 1867 and designed by R.H. Moore it served as the centre for Hops hop trading for the brewing industry . Overview Hops , introduced to England from the Netherlands , are still used in the brewing industry . They are harvested from farms known as hop gardens in Kent , and in the 19th century they were brought by railway to London Bridge Station , or by boat up the River Thames . They were then stored in the many warehouse s in the Borough area. The purpose of the Hop Exchange was to provide a single market centre for dealers in hops. A glass roof allowed business on the trading floor of the Great Hall to be conducted under natural light . There were many similar outcry floor exchanges across London, such as the Coal Exchange Coal , London Metal Exchange Metal and London Stock Exchange Stock exchanges, but wartime bombing, fires, redevelopment and modernisation have left the Hop Exchange the only one still standing. However, a fire in 1920 led to the top two storeys being removed, and the Hop Exchange was then converted into offices. The number of hops indicates the number of reflections from the ionosphere. A similar excursion from an earth station to a communications satellite to another station, counted similarly except that if the return trip is not by satellite, then it s only a half hop.
