Community politics is a movement in United Kingdom British politics to re engage people with political action on a local level. Most developed amongst the Liberal Democrats but adopted to some extent by the British Green party Greens , other parties, and Independents. Community Politics is based on small scale action on local political issues. To give an example of how it works Residents are irritated by rubbish dumped by a playing field. A non community political response would be to issue a statement calling for more resources to be allocated to deal with dumped rubbish. A community politics response would be for local councillor s to lead a group of people to clear the rubbish themselves, then inform the local community through a newsletter. original research date November 2007 cleanup date November 2007 Urban politics is politics in and about city cities . This term refers to the diverse political structure that occurs in urban area s where there is diversity in both race and socio economic status. Urban politics is political science that falls into the field of urban studies , which incorporates many aspects of cities, suburbs, and urbanization . This includes such topics as The structure of political power. Race, ethnic, class, and gender relations in cities and suburbs. The politics of space and spatial relationships . The ongoing urbanization of the world is sometimes portrayed as a sort of natural process, as determined by economics or something else beyond the control of humans. The study of urban politics reveals a different truth altogether that the process of urbanization is itself is inherently political. To study urban politics is to study what happens on the ground, among people who share the same space for day to day living. This makes the study of urban politics particularly challenging and difficult to analyze. ref http web.uvic.ca polisci magnusson urbanoutlines.htm Magnusson, Warren University of Victoria, Political Science 332 Urban Politics , Spring 2006 ref The Marxist approach to urban politics conceptualized the city as a geographical entity produced and reproduced through capitalism, not as a neutral vessel in which autonomous local politics too place. Contentious politics is the use of disruptive techniques to make a politics political point, or to change government policy. Examples of such techniques are actions that disturb the normal activities of society such as Demonstration people demonstrations , general strike action , riot , terrorism , civil disobedience , and even revolution or insurrection . Social movements often engage in contentious politics. The concept distinguishes these forms of contention from the everyday acts of resistance explored by James C. Scott , interstate warfare, and forms of contention employed entirely within institutional settings, such as elections or sports. Tilly defines contentious politics as interactions in which actors make claims bearing on someone else s interest, in which governments appear either as targets, initiators of claims, or third parties. ref Tilly, Charles. Contentious Performances. Cambridge Cambridge University Press, 2008 5. ref Contentious politics has existed forever, but its form varies over time and space. For example, historical sociologist Charles Tilly argues that the nature of contentious politics charged fairly dramatically with the birth of social movements in 18th century Europe. The concept of contentious politics was developed throughout the 1990s and into the 21st century by its most prominent scholars in the United States Sidney Tarrow , Charles Tilly, and Doug McAdam . ref improve date October 2011 The term prefigurative politics is widespread within various activist movements, and it describes modes of organization and social relationships that strive to reflect the future society being sought by the group. The desire is to be the change we want to see in the world as Gandhi wrote. The term prefigurative politics was first used by Wini Breines specifically with reference to the new left movements of the 1960s. She was referring to the different ways of thinking and organizing in the new movements in part as a rejection of the centrism and vanguardism of many of the groups and political parties of the time. It is both a politics of creation, and one of breaking with hierarchy. She wrote The term prefigurative politics may be recognized in counter institutions, demonstrations and the attempt to embody personal and anti hierarchical values in politics. Participatory democracy was central to prefigurative politics. The crux of prefigurative politics imposed substantial tasks, the central one being to create and sustain within the live practice of the movement, relationships and political forms that prefigured and embodied the desired society. Community and Organization in the New Left, 1989, p.6 The Industrial Workers of the World I.W.W. and other anarchist activists refer to this as building a new world in the shell of the old. If a group is aiming to eliminate class distinctions, prefigurative politics demands that there be no class distinctions within that group, nor should that group s actions reinforce classism. The same principle applies ... politics demands they individually and as a group adhere as closely to that goal as possible. Unreferenced date June 2008 Language politics Language politics is a term used to describe political and sometimes social consequences of linguistic differences between people, or on occasion the political consequences of the way a language is spoken and what words are used. It means language can express some authority. Examples include Recognition or not of a language as an official language . Generally this means that all official documents affecting a country or region are published in languages that are official , but not in those that are not. Evidence in a court of law may also be expected to be in an official language only. In countries where there are more than one main language, there are often political implications in decisions that are seen to promote one group of speakers over another, and this is often referred to as language politics.
