It is essentially a screw whose spherical head is enclosed on a housing, which allows the screw a range of motion along several different axes relative to the housing. It has also been hypothesized that polyaxial screws add a safety benefit by failing in the housing screw interface before breaking in the shaft of the bone screw or in the orthopaedic rod. unreferenced date January 2011 wikify date January 2011 A screw pump is a positive displacement pump that use one or several screws to move fluids or solids along the screw s axis. In its simplest form the Archimedes screw Archimedes screw pump , a single screw rotates in a cylindrical cavity, thereby moving the material along the screw s spindle. This ancient construction is still used in many low tech applications, such as irrigation systems and in agriculturural machinery for transporting grain and other solids. Development of the screw pump has led to a variety of multi axis technologies where carefully crafted screws rotate in opposite directions or remains stationary within a cavity. The cavity can be profiled, thereby creating cavities where the pumped material is trapped . In offshore and marine installations, a three spindle screw pump is often used to pump high pressure viscous fluids. Three screws drive the pumped liquid forth in a closed chamber. As the screws rotate in opposite directions, the pumped liquid moves along the screws spindles. Three Spindle screw pumps are used for transport of viscous fluids with lubricating properties. They are suited for a variety of applications such as fuel injection, oil burners, boosting, hydraulics, fuel, lubrication, circulating, feed and so on. Compared to centrifugal pump s, positive displacements PD pumps have several advantages. The pumped fluid is moving axially without turbulence which eliminates foaming that would otherwise occur in viscous fluids. They are also able to pump fluids of higher viscosity without losing flow rate. Also, changes in the pressure difference have little impact on PD pumps compared to centrifugal pumps. orphan date June 2009 A differential screw is a mechanism engineering mechanism used for making small, precise adjustment s to the spacing between two objects such as in focusing a microscope ref http www.funsci.com fun3 en ucomp1 ucomp1.htm A ONE DOLLAR COMPOUND MICROSCOPE ref . It uses a Nut hardware nut with two screw s, one entering each end. The heads of the screws are fixed to the objects whose spacing is to be adjusted. The screws have slightly different pitch threads per inch so that one rotation of the nut moves one screw into the nut by a small amount, and moves the other screw out of the nut by a slightly larger amount. Thus the total spacing between the objects will be slightly increased, by the difference in travel between the two screws. This allows extremely small adjustments using commonly available screws. The distance between nuts traveled by one revolution of a bolt threaded differently with a threads per distance on one end and b tpd on the other end can be calculated simply 1 a 1 b d For example, a 3 8 bolt with coarse 16tpi threads on one side and fine 24tpi on the other would yield about 0.02 per revolution between the nuts 1 16 1 24 0.0208 Other arrangements are also possible, such as having two nuts, one on each object to be adjusted, and the two screw heads attached to each other in the middle. The combined screws would be turned to adjust the spacing in that case. References references Category Mechanisms ... more details

The overhead handle usually incorporates balls as a flyweight. This weight helps to maintain the momentum and thrust of the tool to make it easier to operate.
