  1. Persecution and the Art of Writing

Unreferenced date August 2009 Persecution and the Art of Writing , published in 1952 by the Free Press publisher Free Press , is a book of collected articles written by Leo Strauss . The book contains five previously published essays, many of which were significantly altered by Strauss from their original publication. The general theme of the book is the relationship between politics and philosophy . The thesis of the book is that many ancient and early modern political philosophers, in order to avoid persecution, hid their most heterodoxy heterodox ideas within their texts. Strauss s general argument rearticulated throughout his subsequent writings most notably in The City and Man 1978 is that prior to the 19th century, Western scholars commonly understood that philosophical writing is not at home in any polity, no matter how liberal. Insofar as it questions conventional wisdom at its roots, philosophy must guard itself especially against those readers who believe themselves authoritative, wise, and liberal defenders of the status quo. In questioning established opinions, or in investigating the principles of morality, philosophers of old found it necessary to convey their messages in an oblique manner. Their art of writing was the art of exoteric communication. This is all the more apparent in medieval times, when heterodox political thinkers wrote under the threat of the Inquisition or comparably intransigent tribunals. Strauss s argument is not that the medieval writers he studies reserved one exoteric meaning for the many hoi polloi and an esoteric hidden one for the few hoi aristoi , but that said writers succeeded in conveying meaning proper at the heart of their writings a heart or message irreducible to the letter or historical dimension of texts. Explicitely following G.E. Lessing s lead, Strauss indicates that medieval political philosophers, no less than their ancient ... the many. 1. Persecution of Christians in Japan

Unreferenced date January 2008 After the first landing of Portuguese sailors in Japan in 1542, Christian proselyting led by Francisco de Xavier y Jassu Francisco Xavier started. In the following decades, many thousands of Japanese, including some princes families, converted to Roman Catholicism in the form known as Kirishitan with the cooperation of the central government forming at that time. Toyotomi Hideyoshi formally expelled the missionaries from the country in 1587, since he saw the influence of Jesuite, but above all Franciscan, monks as a threat to his position of power. For economic reasons, however, this decree was hardly enforced. Not until 1597, a year before Hideyoshi s death, were 26 Christians crucified Martyrs of Nagasaki . Hideyoshi s successor Tokugawa Ieyasu initially was tolerant because he profited from trade with the Portuguese, and probably also by the influence of his British consultant William Adams sailor Williams Adams . But after Adams death and after trade relations with Holland and England had had come into existence by which also the conflict between Roman Catholic Christianity and Protestantism became known in Japan , he changed his attitude. The reason for this was the fear of Christian faith wars in Japan and the cognition that many Christians show greater loyalty among themselves and for the church than for him, the Sh gun . From about, 1612 Christianity was gradually prohibited. This development reached its highlight under Ieyasu s successors Tokugawa Hidetada and Tokugawa Iemitsu , particularly after the predominantly Christian population of Ky sh had risen in the Shimabara Rebellion against the shogunate in 1637. The uprising was crushed brutally more than 40,000 Christians were killed. Authorities of persecution were set up, with the goal of a nationwide persecution and extermination of the Christians. Anyone who was suspected of being a Christian had to abandon Christianity publicly and dishonor Christian symbols, which were ...   more details

  1. Persecution of Jehovah's Witnesses in Canada

Jehovah s Witnesses experienced religious persecution in Canada during both world wars because of their evangelical fervour, conspicuous abstinence from patriotic exercises flag saluting & anthem singing and conscientious objection to military service. World War I During World War I Jehovah s Witnesses were targeted because of their anti war attitudes and refusal to take part in military service. Rather than being banned directly, Jehovah s Witnesses had to deal with censorship of their literature during the war and the court s refusal to recognize them as a legitimate religion, thus rendering unable to claim the status of conscientious objector s. World War II During the late 1930s, Witnesses were tried for sedition because their literature attacked the clergy and political leaders of the country. In 1940, one year following Canada s entry into World War II , the Jehovah s Witnesses religion was banned under the War Measures Act . This ban continued until 1943. During this period, some of their children were expelled from school other children were placed in foster homes members were jailed men who refused to enter the army were sent to work camps. In 1940, twenty nine Witnesses were convicted and sentenced to terms averaging one year. In his book State and Salvation , William Kaplan wrote blockquote In July 1940 the government of Canada banned the Jehovah s Witnesses. Overnight it became illegal to be a member of this sect. The law, passed under the War Measures Act, was vigorously enforced. Beatings, mob action, police persecution, and state prosecution confronted the Jehovah s Witnesses as they ignored the ban and continued to go about their work spreading the word of God...
