    File Philip J Nel00.jpg thumb center Memorial tablet at Menneheim near Greytown, KwaZulu Natal Greytown Philip Jacobus Nel was born in the Kranskop district of KwaZulu Natal , South Africa , on 17 June 1902. The son of Piet Nel and Kitty Maritz, he was educated at Maritzburg College , matriculating as Head Prefect and captain of the Rugby football rugby First XV in 1921. Nel enjoyed the rare distinction of earning a Colony of Natal Natal open rugby cap while still at school. He made his debut for the Springboks against the 1928 All Blacks , and captained the side in 1933 against the Australia national rugby union team Wallabies and on the all conquering tour of Australia and New Zealand in 1937. Known affectionately as The Greatest Springboks , Nel s 1937 team remains the only Springbok team ever to have won a test series in New Zealand. Nel saw action in World War II , serving as a major in the Umvoti Mounted Rifles. Married to Jose Havemann, they produced a family of 4 children.     J. Philip Johnson born March 28, 1938 was a List of North Dakota Supreme Court Justices Justice on the North Dakota Supreme Court from 1974 to 1975 and also in 1992. When not serving as justice on the state court, Johnson ran a private practice in Fargo, North Dakota . He attended Minot State College and transferred to the University of North Dakota at Grand Forks, where he received a bachelor of philosophy degree in 1960. He received a juris doctor degree from the University of North Dakota School of Law in 1962. Following admission to the Bar, he was admitted to the United States Army Judge Advocate General s Corps. After three years of active duty, including a tour in Washington, D.C., handling court martial appeals, he returned to North Dakota. He then joined a law firm in Fargo for several years and also served as Assistant State s Attorney for Cass County. In June 1974, Justice Johnson was appointed to the Supreme Court to fill the seat vacated by Justice Teigen. He was defeated in the election for the balance of the term in 1974 and left the Court to return to private practice in Fargo on January 9, 1975, after serving seven months. After the resignation of Justice H. F. Gierke III, Governor George Sinner appointed Johnson to the Court on February 11, 1992.
