The son of Petrus Apianus 1495 1552 is also known as the cartographer of Bavaria . Life He was born in Ingolstadt as Philipp Bienewitz or Bennewitz . At age eleven, the son of mathematician , astronomer and cartographer Peter Apian started to study mathematics at the University of Ingolstadt . Later, aged 18, he studied in Burgundy region Burgundy , Paris and Bourges . Returning in 1552 he became professor. As a Protestant he had to leave in 1569 due to Jesuit s and the counter reformation . At the University of T bingen he lectured for 14 years until he lost this position in 1583 for refusing to negate Calvinism . He died in T bingen . Cartography In 1554, Duke Albrecht of Bavaria orders Apian to create a map of Bavaria for the Bairische Chronik of Johannes Aventinus written 1526 to 1533. In seven years, Apian travelled through Oberbayern and Niederbayern , Oberpfalz , Archbishopric Salzburg and Bishopric Eichst tt . After two years work, a 5 x 5 meter sized map in Scale ratio scale 1 45.000 was finished, to be coloured by Bartel Refinger . Having been in the residence s library since 1563, it was destroyed by a fire in 1782. Smaller Bairische Landtafeln based on the map were ordered by Philipp Apian in 1566 from Jost Amman as 24 tables of scale 1 144.000 anfertigen. It is said that the accuracy was only surpassed in 19th century and that Napol on Bonaparte used them when invading Bavaria. Abraham Ortelius published them as ex tabula Philippi Apiani. It was named after Peter Apian 1495 1552 and his son Philipp Apian . Peter Apian was a mathematician at the University of Ingolstadt, Bavaria s oldest university which was later moved to Munich . His son Philipp 1531 1589 was his successor as the professor of mathematics at Ingolstadt University and the first cartographer to produce a complete map of Bavaria. These two chorale s have inspired many composers, including Johann Sebastian Bach , whose cantatas Wie sch n leuchtet der Morgenstern, BWV 1 and Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme, BWV 140 are based on them. The two hymns are sometimes referred to as the King and Queen of Chorales, respectively. The pipe organ organ transcription of the latter, as published in the Sch bler Chorales , has become world famous. Nicolai is supposed to be the last example of the Meistersinger tradition, in which words and music, text and melody stem from one and the same person. Life The son of William V, Duke of Bavaria and Renata of Lorraine , he studied theology and philosophy at Ingolstadt University with his younger brother Ferdinand of Bavaria archbishop Ferdinand later archbishop of Cologne . He was given the honorary posts of canon of Cologne , Mainz, Salzburg and Trier, having already been made prince bishop of Regensburg aged three. His father hoped Philipp s election as bishop would bind the diocese more strongly to the duchy of Bavaria and defend against the Protestant forces in the city of Regensburg . During his minority Philipp was represented by Felizian Ninguarda , then from 1582 the Bohemian baron Zbinko Berka ab. Aufgrund von Spannungen. Zbinko and Philipp s father came into tension and so Zbinko handed over the diocese s administration to Jakob Miller in 1568. Philipp was made a cardinal by pope Clement VIII in the consistory of 18 December 1596, but he died in a riding accident two years later and is buried in the Munich Frauenkirche there is also a bronze memorial to him in Regensburg Cathedral . To Veit is due the credit of having been the first to revive the almost forgotten technique of fresco painting . Biography Veit was born in Berlin , Kingdom of Prussia Prussia . He was the son of a banker Simon Veit and his wife Dorothea von Schlegel Dorothea , daughter of Moses Mendelssohn , who subsequently left him to marry Karl Wilhelm Friedrich Schlegel Friedrich Schlegel . Veit received his first art education in Dresden and Vienna . He was strongly influenced by, and joined, the Nazarene movement in Rome , where he worked for some years before moving to Frankfurt . In Frankfurt, where his most important works are preserved at the St del , he was active from 1830 to 1843 as director of the art collections and as professor of painting. From 1853 till his death in 1877 he held the post of director of the municipal gallery at Mainz .
