  1. Activated therapy

Orphan date April 2010 Activated therapy is an experimental cancer treatment . In activated cancer therapy, a non toxic therapeutic becomes cytopathogenic cell killing when activated by an external energy source, including ultrasound or red light. The specific activated therapies are referred to as ultrasound activated cancer therapy USAT and photodynamic therapy PDT . When these therapies are used in combination, it is referred to as the SonneLux protocol or sonodynamic photodynamic therapy SPDT . ref Activated Cancer Therapy Using Light and Ultrasound A Case Series of Sonodynamic Photodynamic Therapy in 115 Patients over a 4 Year Period J.N. Kenyon, R.J. Fuller and T.J. Lewis. Current Drug Therapy, 2009,4. ref Emerging activated therapeutics sensitizers that are used with the SonneLux Protocol are non toxic and have great specificity for malignant tissue. When activated, the sensitizers cause destruction to cancer cells only and do not impact healthy tissue. The SonneLux Protocol has received some positive results in mouse, zebra fish studies and clinical trials. Further, the mechanism of tumor cell destruction is necrosis instead of apoptosis . A vaccine like effect has been noted. ref Toxicity and Cytopathogenic Properties Toward Human Melanoma Cells of Activated Cancer Therapeutics in Zebra Fish. T. J. Lewis. 1. Sonodynamic therapy

Sonodynamic therapy is an experimental cancer therapy which uses ultrasound to enhance the cytotoxic effects of drugs known as sonosensitizers . It has been tested in vitro and in animals. Sonodynamic Therapy SDT also referred to as Ultrasound Activated Therapy, the synergistic effect of drugs and ultrasound, is a promising new cancer treatment. This treatment modality involves a novel sonosensitizing agent that is derived from chlorophyll, is sensitive to red light, and is extremely sensitive to ultrasound. SonneMed, LLC, a small molecule cancer therapeutics venture holds the intellectual property rights to this sonosensitizing agent. The agent is specifically absorbed in tumor cells and produces cytotoxic effects upon interaction with diagnostic strength ultrasound. ref Primary Clinical Use of Sonodynamic Therapy SDT for Advanced Breast Cancer , The Tumorocidal effect of Sonodynamic Therapy SDT on S 180 sarcoma in mice, Integrative Cancer Therapies, Vol. 7, No. 2, 96 102 2008 .DOI 10.1177 1534735408319065. ref The mechanism of toxicity involves at least the generation of singlet oxygen , which is cytotoxic. 1. Photothermal therapy

Photothermal therapy PTT is an experimental use of electromagnetic radiation most often in the form of infrared that is proposed to treat various medical conditions, including cancer . The basic model for its use is derived in part from photodynamic therapy , in which a photosensitizer is excited with specific band light. This activation brings the sensitizer to an excited state where it then releases vibrational energy heat . The heat is the actual method of therapy that kills the targeted cells. Unlike photodynamic therapy, photothermal therapy does not require oxygen to interact with the target cells or tissues. Current studies also show that photothermal therapy is able to use longer wavelegth light, which is less energetic and therefore less harmful to other cells and tissues. Some research has indicated problems with aggregation of the photosensitizers , local shock waves, hyperthermic effects, but otherwise little phototoxicity . Many of the side effects and complications, as well as the potential applications of photothermal therapy, are unknown. Recent Study One of the biggest recent successes in photothermal therapy is the use of gold nanoparticles. Spherical gold nanoparticles absorptions have not been optimal for in vivo applications. This is because the peak absorptions have been limited to 520  nm for 10  nm diameter silicon nanoparticles to only 580  nm for gold nanoparticles approximately 100  nm in diameter. Skin, tissues, and hemoglobin have a transmission window from 650  nm up to 900  nm with a peak transmission at approximately 800  nm Near infrared window in biological tissue known as the Near Infrared Window . This was solved ... but are being extended. 1. Cytoluminescent therapy

Cytoluminescent Therapy is a proposed cancer treatment as a form of Photodynamic Therapy PDT characterized by a photosynthesis photosensitiser that is supposedly eliminated from normal tissue but selectively accumulated in neoplastic and dysplastic tissue. This is followed by whole body irradiation with light of the specific wave length which activates the photosensitiser. The result is supposed to be selective damage or elimination of tumor cells while normal tissues are unharmed. However, tests as of 2003 did not show any positive clinical effects in a group of 48 patients treated in this way. The original providers of CLT in Killaloe, Ireland, are no longer performing the treatment. Much of their claims of effectiveness were based upon anecdotal reports, not research. In fact, the wavelength of light used to active the chlorphyll derived photosensitizer used in CLT is incapable of penetrating tissue more than several millimeters. The FDA approved therapy PDT uses red light wavelength approximately 600 700  nm and penetrates human tissue up to 2 centimeters. No wavelength can fully penetrate the human body, as the purveyors of CLT claimed. Typically, infusion therapy means that a drug is administered intravenously, but the term also may refer to situations where drugs are provided through other non oral routes, such as intramuscular injections and epidural routes into the membranes surrounding the spinal cord . Until the 1980s, patients receiving infusion therapy had to remain in the inpatient setting for the duration of their therapy. Heightened emphasis on cost containment in health care, as well as developments in the clinical administration of the therapy, led to strategies to administer infusion therapy in alternate settings. For individuals requiring long term therapy, inpatient care is not only tremendously expensive but also prevents the individual from resuming normal lifestyle and work activities. 1. Expressive therapy

Expressive therapy , also known as expressive arts therapy or creative arts therapy , is the use of the creative arts as a form of therapy . Unlike traditional art expression, the process of creation is emphasized rather than the final product. Expressive therapy is predicated on the assumption that people can heal through use of imagination and the various forms of creative expression. Types Expressive therapy is an umbrella term. Some common types of expressive therapy include art therapy art and dementia dance therapy drama therapy music therapy writing therapy All expressive therapists share the belief that through creative expression and the tapping of the imagination, a person can examine the body, feelings, emotions and his or her thought process. However, expressive arts therapy is its own therapeutic discipline, an inter modal discipline where the therapist and client move freely between drawing, dancing, music, drama, poetry, etc. Although often separated by the form of creative art, some expressive therapists consider themselves intermodal, using expression in general, rather than a specific discipline to treat clients, altering their approach based on the clients needs, or through using multiple forms of expression with the same client to aid with deeper exploration. ref cite book author Malchiodi, Cathy A. date published 2003 Expressive Therapies publisher New York Guilford ISBN 1593853793 ref Expressive arts therapy is the practice of using imagery, storytelling ... arts therapy is also about experiencing the natural capacity of creative expression and creative community for healing.
