Achieving chartered status in any profession denotes to the wider community a high level of specialised subject knowledge and professional competence. The award of the Chartered Physicist CPhys demonstrates the highest standards of professionalism, up to date expertise, quality and safety, and for capacity to undertake independent practice and exercise leadership. As well as competence, the title denotes commitment to keep pace with advancing knowledge and with the increasing expectations and requirements for which any profession must take responsibility ref name CPhys guidlines http www.iop.org membership chartered chartered titles cphys page 38079.html CPhys Overview ref . Until 1998 the status of Chartered Physicist was granted automatically with membership of the Institute of Physics, however since then it has become a separate qualification that is equal in stature to Chartered Engineer . In order to gain the qualification, a physicist must be appropriately qualified an MSci or MPhys undergraduate master s degree is standard, although experience leading to an equivalent level can be counted , have had a minimum of two years of structured training and a minimum of two years responsible work experience, have demonstrated a commitment to continuing professional development, and have gained a number of competencies. Peter Fowler Fellow of the Royal Society FRS 27 February 1923  8 November 1996 was a British physicist. His father was the physicist Sir Ralph Howard Fowler , who determined the state of matter in white dwarf stars, and his grandfather, a giant of 20th century physics, Lord Ernest Rutherford , who discovered the atomic nucleus. Peter researched primary cosmic radiation, measuring the presence of beryllium, boron, and lithium in cosmic rays . At the University of Bristol , Fowler studied under Cecil Powell . Fowler developed improved methods for measuring cosmic rays, using high altitude balloons and later jets, and investigated the radiation hazards of high altitude supersonic flight. He studied radioactive fallout from the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear power station explosion in Ukraine, and after the 1988 Lockerbie aircraft bombing he developed a thermal neutron based methodology for screening passengers luggage. Peter Fowler served as a radar officer in the wartime RAF 1942 46 . Following the D Day landings, RAF bombers soon experienced intensive German jamming of their Gee navigation system. Fowler used his already well honed skills to detect the interference signals and through expert analysis was able to locate the station responsible, which was subsequently destroyed. It is reported that Goering demanded a court martial over what the Axis powers viewed as a breach of security they did not believe that it was possible to locate a jamming station so rapidly. Image Jan Smit 20060623 3.jpg thumb Jan Smit at the University of Amsterdam Jan Smit is a Dutch theoretical physicist. During his PhD at UCLA with professor Finkelstein he made some early contributions to lattice formulation of quantum field theory around 1972, which was a year before Kenneth G. Wilson Kenneth Wilson , and two years before Alexander Markovich Polyakov Alexander Polyakov . However, he encountered some problems with fermion doubling which he could not solve at the moment. At that time he did not realize the value of his work and he only mentioned it briefly in his Ph.D. thesis in 1974, which was about Schwinger source theory. My Son, the Physicist is a science fiction short story by American writer Isaac Asimov . It was commissioned by Hoffman Electronics Corporation and appeared in February 1962 in Scientific American . It later appeared in Asimov s collection Nightfall and Other Stories 1969 . Plot summary Gerard Cremona, a communications engineer with an American space agency, is trying to maintain communication that has been established with an expedition that has apparently reached the planet Pluto after four years in space. The difficulty lies in the significant delays for the radio signal to travel back and forth, making timely and meaningful interaction impossible. His proud mother, who happens to visit his office whilst he is wrestling with the problem, ultimately advises him to keep talking and get the expedition crew to keep talking as well. That way, although it normally takes twelve hours for radio waves to cover the distance, it is possible to have effectively continuous conversation. Mrs. Cremona declares that all women know that the secret to spreading news is to Just Keep Talking . Thus, by constantly transmitting data and instructions from both ends, and interjecting questions or responses as needed, no time need be wasted. Although it plays no part in the story, the fictional supercomputer Multivac is mentioned inter alia . br Nightfall DEFAULTSORT My Son, The Physicist Category Multivac short stories by Isaac Asimov Category 1962 short stories Category Scientific American articles fr Mon fils, le physicien ... more details
