It was founded in 1961 by Marion Stein Marion, Countess of Harewood and Fanny Waterman , who is today its Chairman and Artistic Director. The competition was first held in 1963 there was a four year gap before the 2000 competition . It takes place in the Great Hall of the University of Leeds and in Leeds Town Hall . The 16th competition took place 26 August 13 September 2009. It was the first time that the competition has not housed competitors at Tetley Hall , a residence hall at the University of Leeds which closed in 2006. Thomas Haigh 1769 1808 , was a violinist, pianist, and composer. Haigh was born in London in 1769, and studied composition under Haydn in 1791 and 1792. Haigh s numerous compositions include sonatas for pianoforte solo and for pianoforte and violin or flute, serenatas, capriccios, and arrangements. Some of them were reprinted at Paris and others at Offenbach Disambiguation needed date June 2011 . John Freckleton Burrowes 23 April 1787 31 March 1852 was an English organist and composer. Biography He was born in London. His master was William Horsley. His first published work was a set of six English ballads, Printed for the author, 5 Great Suffolk Street, Charing Cross in 1812 he published an overture op. 8 which had been performed at the vocal concerts at Hanover Square, London Hanover Square . This was followed in 1817 by a similar work op. 13 produced by the Philharmonic Society , of which Burrowes was one of the original members. In 1818 the first edition of his Pianoforte Primer appeared, a little work which was very successful, and is still in use as an instruction book. In 1819, Burrowes brought out a Thorough Bass Primer , which achieved a success equal to that of the earlier work. In the course of his long career he also published a Companion to the Pianoforte Primer 1826 , a Companion to the Thorough Bass Primer 1832 , The Tutor s Assistant for the Pianoforte 1834 , and a Guide to Practice on the Pianoforte 1841 . He also published collections of psalm tunes, prelude s, dances, Scotch and Irish airs, sonata s, a trio for three flutes, songs, and many arrangements of operas, &c., for the pianoforte. For nearly forty years, Burrowes was organist of St. James s Church, Piccadilly . About 1834 he settled at 13 Nottingham Place, where he died, after a long and painful illness on 31 March 1852.
