  1. Primus pilus

Onesource date January 2009 RomanMilitary The Primus pilus was the senior centurion of a Roman legion . Historical role In the late Roman republic , the cohort military unit cohort of which there were between six and ten , became the basic tactical unit of the legions. The cohort was composed of five to eight centuries each led by a centurion assisted by an optio , a soldier who could read and write. The senior centurion of the legion and commander of the first cohort was called the lang la primus pilus first file formation file , a career soldier and advisor to the Legatus legate . While every normal cohort was composed of 5 to 8 centuries normally 6 in secondus to decius cohorts , the one that was led by the primus pilus the first had about 10 centuries, or 800 men. It also had extra men, who were cooks, clerks, etc. who did not fight. The primus pilus was so called because his own century was in the first file pilus of the first cohort primus . 1. Merozygote

unreferenced date September 2008 Merozygote is a state when a cell, usually bacterial, is temporarily diploid as result of DNA transfer processes like bacterial conjugation conjugation . One example of how merozygotes can be formed is the transfer of genetic material during an HFR transformation. In HFR transformation, an F prokaryote transfers its F factor into an Hfr cell . This F factor plasmid is incorporated into Hfr DNA. When Hfr mates with an F cell, the chromosome acts as a rolling circle transferring information across a Pilus sex pilus . The F factor is the last thing on the circle and often isn t transferred to the F cell, so it remains an F cell, but has all the extra DNA sequence genetic information from the transferred Hfr chromosome. This temporary partial diploid of the DNA may lead to recombination between the corresponding portions of the DNA, so that the genetic material of the donor may be incorporated into the chromosome of the recipient, thereby altering the genotype of the recipient. However, if no recombination occurs, the linear fragment of donor DNA in the recipient cytoplasm will be lost after one cycle. These merozygotes help to study dominance variation and mutation can be known. biology stub Category Cells ...   more details

  1. Hfr cell

Refimprove auto yes date December 2009 Cleanup date May 2008 An Hfr cell also called an Hfr strain is a bacterium with a bacterial conjugation conjugative plasmid often the fertility factor F factor integrated into its genome genomic DNA. Hfr is the abbreviation for high frequency recombination , which was first characterized by Luca Cavalli Sforza . Unlike a normal F sup sup cell, hfr strains will, upon conjugation with a F sup sup cell, attempt to transfer their entire DNA through the mating bridge , not to be confused with the pilus . This occurs because the F factor has integrated itself via an insertion point in the bacterial chromosome. Due to the F factor s inherent nature to transfer itself during conjugation, the rest of the bacterial genome is dragged along with it, thus making such cells very useful and interesting in terms of studying gene linkage and recombination. Because the genome s rate of transfer through the mating bridge is constant, molecular biologists and geneticists can use Hfr strain of bacteria often E. coli to study genetic linkage and map the chromosome. The procedure commonly used for this is called interrupted mating . A bacterium may undergo Bacterial conjugation conjugation . During this process, genetic material is transferred to another bacterium through the mating bridge. It is yet undetermined if the Pilus Pili transfer DNA or if these structures are simply used to bring mating bacteria close enough to form a mating bridge. ref Langmuir. 2008 Jun 1 24 13 6796 802. Taxobox color violet virus group IV familia Leviviridae genus Allolevivirus species Bacteriophage Q Bacteriophage Q is an icosahedral virus with a diameter of 25  nm. Its host is Escherichia coli . Q enters its host cell through the side of the F pilus . Genetics The genome of Q is 4218 nucleotides long. The genome has three open reading frame s and encodes four protein s A1, A2, CP and q replicase . The genome is highly structured, which regulates gene expression and protects the genome from host RNase s. Protein A2 A2 is called the maturation protein due to its lysis activity. One copy of A2 is present per virion. The mechanism of lysis is similar to that of penicillin A2 inhibits the formation of peptidoglycan by inhibiting the enzyme UDP N acetylglucosamine 1 carboxyvinyltransferase MurA , which catalyzes the first committed step of peptidoglycan synthesis. A2 also functions in host cell recognition and cell entry. When A2 binds to the sex pilus of the bacterium, A2 cleaves and forms a pore into the host. RNA Polymerase The RNA polymerase that replicates both the plus and minus RNA strands is a complex of four proteins the beta subunit replicase is encoded by the phage, while the other three subunits are encoded by the bacterial genome alpha subunit ribosomal protein S1 , gamma subunit EF Tu , and delta subunit EF Ts . ref name van Duin van Duin J, Tsareva N. 1. Pellicle (biology)

Unreferenced date January 2007 Other uses Pellicle disambiguation The pellicle is a thin layer supporting the cell membrane in various protozoa , protecting them and allowing them to retain their shape, especially during locomotion, allowing the organism to be more hydrodynamic . They vary from flexible and elastic to rigid. Although stiff, the pellicle is flexible and allows the protist to fit into tighter spaces. In ciliate s and Apicomplexa , it is formed from closely packed vesicles called alveoli . In euglenid s, it is formed from protein strips arranged spirally along the length of the body. Examples of protists with a pellicle are the euglenoids and the paramecium , a ciliate. The pellicle consists of many bacteria that adhere to the surface by their attachment Pilus pili . Thus, attachment pili allow the organisms to remain in the broth, from which they take nutrients, while they congregate near air, where the oxygen concentration is greatest. 1. Cohort (military unit)

RomanMilitary A cohort from the Latin cohors , plural cohortes was the basic tactical unit of a Roman legion following the Marian reforms reforms of Gaius Marius in 107 BC. Legionary cohort Immediately after the Marian reforms, a Roman legion comprised ten cohorts, known simply as The first cohort , The second cohort etc. The first cohort was considered to be the most senior and prestigious, and the tenth the least. A cohort consisted of six centuries or centuria Military centuria of 80 men, each commanded by a centurion assisted by junior officers. At various times prior to the reforms, a century might have meant a unit of 60, 80 or 100 men. It is almost certain that the most senior centurion of the six would have commanded the entire cohort. In order of seniority, the six centurions were titled hastatus posterior , hastatus prior , princeps posterior , princeps prior , pilus posterior and pilus prior most senior . This followed the order of seniority in the earlier legions, where the youngest and least experienced units were termed hastati , next principes , and the oldest and most experienced triarii pilus was an alternative name for triarius , the singular of triarii . During the first century AD, the command structure and make up of the legions was formally laid down, in a form that would endure for centuries. The first cohort was now made up of five double strength centuries totalling 800 men, the centurion of its first century automatically being the most senior in the legion. This century was known as the primus pilus first file , and its centurion was known as the primus pilum first spear . The legion at this time numbered about 5,400 men, including officers, engineers and usually a small unit of cavalry equites 120 men and horses . ref Goldsworthy, Adrian 2003 .
