A flux tube is a generally tube like Cylinder geometry cylindrical region of space containing a magnetic field , such that the field at the side surfaces is parallel to those surfaces. Both the cross sectional area of the tube and the field contained may vary along the length of the tube, but the magnetic flux is always constant. As used in astrophysics , a flux tube generally has a larger magnetic field and other properties that differ from the surrounding space. They are commonly found around star s, including the Sun , which has many flux tubes of around 300 km diameter. Sunspot s are also associated with larger flux tubes of 2500 km diameter. Some planet s also have flux tubes. A well known example is the flux tube between Jupiter and its moon Io moon Io . Basically, a tube is a cylindrical , hollow piece with a round or oval profile, made of plastic , paperboard , or aluminum . Both ends of this tube are treated differently during the manufacturing process and filling. In general, on one end of the tube body there is a round orifice, which can be closed by different caps and closures. The orifice can be shaped in many different ways. Plastic nozzle s in various styles and lengths are just one good example. To attach caps and closure s, in most cases a thread is tapped onto the opening structure. The oil level is a little low now to compensate for expansion when heating commences. Such a setup is commonly used in the determination of the melting point of a Chemical substance substance . The apparatus itself resembles a glass test tube with an attached handle. Operation Oil is poured into the tube, and then the handle is heated, either by a small flame or some other heating element. The shape of the Thiele tube allows for formation of convection currents in the oil when it is heated. File Z tube.svg right thumb 200px Z tube The Z tube is an experimental Tool apparatus for measuring the tensile strength of a liquid . It consists of a Z shaped tube with open ends, filled with a liquid, and set on top of a spinning table. If the tube were straight, the liquid would immediately fly out one end or the other of the tube as it began to spin. By bending the ends of the tube back towards the center of rotation , a shift of the liquid away from center will result in the water level in one end of the tube rising and thus increasing the pressure in that end of the tube, and consequently returning the liquid to the center of the tube. By measuring the rotational speed and the distance from the center of rotation to the liquid level in the bent ends of the tube, the pressure reduction inside the tube can be calculated. Tube riding is a term used by surfer s to describe riding well inside the curve or barrel of a finely shaped breaking wave. Under the right conditions, waves in some areas form a moving tube or cylinder as they break, for example, see the Banzai Pipeline in Hawaii. The most straightforward way to tube ride is by body surfing . Body surfers ride the waves on their stomachs without a board and thus they can relatively easily access the tube, even on a moderately small wave that is barreling. It is also possible to tube ride using a boogie board, a surfboard , and other wave riding tools. It usually contains two electron gun s, which can project two thin electron beams at right angles. The beams can be bent by applying voltages to various electrodes in the tube. The electron beams are visible as fine bluish lines. This is accomplished by filling the tube with low pressure helium gas. A few of the electrons in the beam collide with the helium atoms, causing them to fluoresce and emit light. They are usually used to teach electromagnetic effects because they show how an electron beam is affected by electric field s and by magnetic field s. Motions in fields Charged particles in a uniform electric field follow a parabolic trajectory , since the electric field term of the Lorentz force which acts on the particle is the product of the particle s charge and the magnitude of the electric field, oriented in the direction of the electric field . In a uniform magnetic field however, charged particles follow a circular trajectory due to the cross product in the magnetic field term of the Lorentz force. That is, the force from the magnetic field acts on the particle in a direction perpendicular to the particle s direction of motion. See Lorentz force for more details.
