They were carried by repair technicians who did home service calls in the days when Receiver radio radios and Television TV sets television sets were too large and heavy for the average homeowner to bring to the repair shop. The tube caddy had to be large enough to hold several of each type of tube likely to be needed on a typical day of service calls so that the technician did not need to return to the shop during his rounds. Because tubes are quite light the caddy did not have to accommodate a large payload and could also be constructed with very light materials so the overall package weighed far less than it appeared to. It usually contains two electron gun s, which can project two thin electron beams at right angles. The beams can be bent by applying voltages to various electrodes in the tube. The electron beams are visible as fine bluish lines. This is accomplished by filling the tube with low pressure helium gas. A few of the electrons in the beam collide with the helium atoms, causing them to fluoresce and emit light. They are usually used to teach electromagnetic effects because they show how an electron beam is affected by electric field s and by magnetic field s. Motions in fields Charged particles in a uniform electric field follow a parabolic trajectory , since the electric field term of the Lorentz force which acts on the particle is the product of the particle s charge and the magnitude of the electric field, oriented in the direction of the electric field .
