Planetarymigration occurs when a planet or other stellar satellite interacts with a disk of gas or planetesimal s, resulting in the alteration of the satellite s orbital parameters, especially its semi major axis . The generally accepted Solar nebula Formation of planets theory of planet formation from a protoplanetary disk predicts such planets cannot form so close to their stars, as there is insufficient mass at such small radii and the temperature is too high to allow the formation of rocky or icy planetesimals. It has also become clear that terrestrial planet terrestrial mass planet s may be subject to rapid inward migration if they form while the gas disk is still present. This may affect the formation of the cores of the giant planets which have masses of the order of 10 Earth masses , if those planets form via the core accretion mechanism. Planetarymigration is the most likely explanation for hot Jupiter s, extrasolar planets with gas giant jovian masses and orbits of only a few days. File Moon apollo17 schmitt boulder.jpg thumb Planetary geologist and NASA astronaut Harrison Schmitt Harrison Jack Schmitt collecting lunar sample s during the Apollo 17 mission Planetary geology , alternatively known as astrogeology or exogeology , is a planetary science discipline concerned with the geology of the celestial bodies such as the planet s and their moon s, asteroid s, comet s, and meteorite s. Although the geo prefix typically indicates topics of or relating to the Earth , planetary geology is named as such for historical and convenience reasons. Due to the types of investigations involved, it is also closely linked with Earth based geology. Planetary geology includes such topics as determining the internal structure of the terrestrial planets , and also looks at planetary volcanism and surface processes such as impact Impact crater crater s, fluvial and Aeolian processes aeolian processes. The structures of the giant planets and their moons are also examined, as is the make up of the minor bodies of the solar system, such as asteroid s, the Kuiper Belt , and comet s. Eugene Shoemaker is credited with creating the Branch of Astrogeology now called the Astrogeology Research Program within the U.S. Geological Survey . Unreferenced date December 2009 Planetary phase is the term used to describe the appearance of the illuminated section of a planet . Like lunar phase s, the planetary phase depends on the relative position of the sun , the planet and the observer. As seen from Earth , the inferior planet s may exhibit the full range of phases from new only the unilluminated hemisphere being visible to full. In the case of Venus , observations during the crescent phase often reveal that the unlit portion is still emitting some light this phenomenon is known as the ashen light , and is currently unexplained. Seen from space, the Earth also seems to go through phases. Superior planet s can only ever appear as full or gibbous. oneref date February 2010 A planetary scanner also called an orbital scanner is a type of image scanner for making scans of rare book s and other easily damaged documents. In essence, such a scanner is a mounted camera taking photograph photos of a well lit environment. Originally, such scanners were expensive and could only be found in archive s and museum s, but with the availability of cheap, high Display resolution resolution digital camera s, DIY planetary scanners have become affordable, and for instance are being used by volunteer scan providers for Project Gutenberg . Flatbed scanners often come in contact with at least part of the object to be scanned. They also require books to be fully opened most of the time there are some exceptions where the scanning surface ends at the edge of the flatbed scanner, so that a book can be opened partially . Both practices can damage rare books For example, opening a book 180 degrees can be damaging to its spine.
