  1. Plant geneticist

A plant geneticist is a scientist involved with the study of genetics in botany . Typical work is done with gene s in order to isolate and then develop certain plant Trait biology trait s. Once a certain trait, such as plant height, fruit sweetness, or tolerance to cold, is found, a plant geneticist works to improve breeding methods to ensure that future plant generations possess the desired traits. Plant genetics played a key role in the modern day theories of heredity , beginning with Gregor Mendel s study of pea plants in the 19th century. The occupation has since grown to encompass advancements in biotechnology that have led to greater understanding of plant breeding and Hybrid biology hybridization . Commercially, plant geneticists are sometimes employed to develop methods of making produce more nutritious, or altering plant pigments to make the food more enticing to consumers. 1. Plant taxonomy

Unreferenced date June 2009 Plant taxonomy is the science that finds, describes, classifies, identifies, and names plant s. It thus is one of the main branches of alpha taxonomy taxonomy . Plant taxonomy is closely allied to history of plant systematics plant systematics , and there is no sharp boundary between the two. In practice, plant systematics is involved with relationships between plants and their evolution, especially at the higher levels, whereas plant taxonomy deals with the actual handling of plant specimen s. The precise relationship between taxonomy and systematics, however, has changed along with the goals and methods employed. Plant taxonomy is well known for being turbulent, and traditionally there is no really close agreement on wiktionary circumscription circumscription and placement of taxon taxa . See the list of systems of plant taxonomy . Identification and classification Two goals of plant taxonomy are the identification and classification of plants. The distinction between these two goals is important and often overlooked. Plant identification is the determination of the identity of an unknown plant by comparison with previously collected specimens or with the aid of books or identification manuals. The process of identification connects the specimen with a published name. Once a plant specimen has been identified, its name and properties are known. 1. Biennial plant

Image Parsley Curled.jpg right thumb 200px Parsley is an example of a biennial plant. A biennial plant is a flowering plant that takes two years to complete its biological lifecycle. In the first year the plant grows leaves, stems, and roots vegetative structures , then it enters a period of dormancy over the colder months. Usually the stem remains very short and the leaves are low to the ground, forming a rosette. Many biennials require a cold treatment, or vernalization , before they will flower. During the next spring or summer, the stem of the biennial plant elongates greatly, or bolts . The plant then flowers, producing fruits and seed s before it finally dies. There are far fewer biennials than either perennial plants or annual plants . Under extreme climatic conditions, a biennial plant may complete its life cycle in a very short period of time e.g. three or four months instead of two years . This is quite common in vegetable or flower seedlings that were exposed to cold conditions, or vernalized, before they were planted in the ground. This behavior leads to many normally biennial plants being treated as annual plant annuals in some areas.
