Cooper was educated at the Sydney Grammar School and the University of Sydney , where he won the Cooper and Gilchrist scholarships and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts B.A. and in 1868 a Master of Arts postgraduate M.A. . He continued to paint miniatures and exhibit them at the Royal Academy as late as 1821 but at an early date he took the stage, first appearing in London as Oroonoko in 1785 at Covent Garden Theatre Covent Garden .
