  1. Tiara of Pope Pius VII

Unreferenced date July 2008 The Tiara of Pope Pius VII was the first tiara manufactured to replace the papal tiaras stolen and smashed on Napoleon I of France Napoleon s orders. It was given to Pope Pius VII in 1820. Though of traditional papal tiara design it is made of gold and silver cloth, the jewels being represented by colored silk embroidery. Only the cross at its top is of gold metal. It is thus much less ornate than the tiaras given to popes later in the 19th century. With the creation of the later tiaras, the Tiara of Pope Pius VII was dropped from Papal use, and remains now a museum piece in the Vatican Treasury. History The painting seems to have been commissioned by Charles Pierre Claret de Fleurieu Fleurieu , intendant g n ral to the French emperor, though no written mention of a commission survives. It was painted at the Tuileries around the end of February 1805 from life. David seems to have been won over and impressed by Pius s simplicity and deep humanity, choosing to show him in an introspective pose rather than as the most powerful prelate in Christianity. He was paid 10,000 francs for it and it was exhibited at the Senate of France galerie du S nat and then assigned to the mus e Napol on now known as the Louvre . He was then hung at the ch teau du Luxembourg in 1824 before returning to the Louvre in 1827 . It is in the basilica of St Peter s in the Vatican City . ref All references taken from Rudolf Wittkower, Bernini, the Sculptor of the Roman Baroque , 1997 4th ed. , p.295 7 ref Early sketches by Bernini for the work indicate that the tomb was to be placed in the basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore , as was the wish of Alexander s papal successor, Clement IX . To the viewer s right there is Truth and then behind that is the half figure Prudence . Perhaps most dramatically, below Alexander, is the figure of Death in gilt bronze rather than marble , clutching a sandglass and being overwhelmed by the billowing drapery. Execution Work begun on the monument in 1671, six years after the death of Alexander VII , and was completed in 1678. A team of artists under Bernini s supervision undertook the project, working on all its aspects such as the many figures, the billowing marble drapery, the coat of arms. Once Bernini himself had completed the designs for the tomb for which he received payment in October 1672 , its physical ...
